Well, I went ahead and installed a volume control in my Cibola and it's working great.
Very simple to do if you're a techy type person.
Follow the yellow wire from the headphone jack to the PCB and remove and place a 10K audio taper pot in between.
I ran a wire to the butt end and installed a tiny pot and used "O" rings under the knob to give it some smooth drag. Great
Am I the first to post this mod after all this time??? Shocked
The pic is crappy but you get the idea.

Hector

Think that few folks are modifying their Tesoro's  as it voids the lifetime warranty

I guess I'm one of the few people who bought one used and didn't really care about the warranty.
I actually had plans to do the volume and GB mod BEFORE I even had possession of the unit Crazy
If this one were to die and I couldn't fix it and Tesoro wouldn't sell me a lone PCB then I'd be bummed Cry
I did a 5hr day last Sun and had a problem with ear fatigue only after about 2-3hrs (very trashy area)
Also have dug 3 "ghost" targets that disappeared while digging (I think manual GB will help for this)
I really wish there was an aluminum disc mod for the Cibola since I dug a 1/4" square flake of foil at 6" and thought sure it was a coin or a goodie...didn't sound anything like a tab.
Time to go out and make a test garden while it's not raining...vid coming soon!

That's a common misconception about ground balance. Ground imbalance tends to give you a background warble, but not normally a solid target sound. Most ghost targets that seem to disappear are caused by a target crumbling as you dig (iron or steel that is corroded will do this and "vanish" into the soil). Another thing that causes them is to accidentally flip a coin on edge as you dig. Try taking a coin in the air and holding it so it is horizontal to your coil. Note the distance from the coil that still gets you a return. Now turn the coin so it is perpendicular to the coil and repeat. Note the diminished distance. Some smaller coins can't be detected on edge even if they nearly touch the coil.

When you have a ghost target that you believe to be a solid hit, remove all loose soil and scan it on the surface. Look through the soil you have already removed to see if you stood it upright during your digging.

Small items of jewelry can also "vanish" as you dig for them. Once again, the target becomes out of range from falling deep inside your hole. A detector upgrade won't fix this.

Good stuff GD!
I was thinking that if I was hitting a high iron spot, whether it was natural or a really old spread out nail, that the GB would help disc out those areas?
After spending a few hrs clearing the mound of junk out of my future coin test garden, I found another one of those elusive disappearing targets, and again it was a micro flake of foil...we're talking 1/8" at most!
I'm thinking that's what I've been finding and haven't figured out how to tell those small hard hits that disc out and then vanish.

Someone could make a ton of $ if they could come up with an aluminum discriminator detector.

Well, I finished all the mods on my Cibola and picked up a good 1/2" to 1" on silver coin depth. Smiley
GB setting was WAY positive for my soil, so now it seems more stable with the manual balance.
I'm wondering if this will help with deep iron targets not hitting like a shallow coin?(unless I look at it in all metal mode)
I was going to do a video of my coin garden test to show before and after mods, but it took WAY longer to set up than I thought, due to excessive trash in the yard. It took 15 hrs to clear all the nails and crap from a 30sq' plot, and every time I was ready to go shoot a vid, it started to rain Angry
As soon as the weather shapes up, I'll shoot some very scientific vids.
I started a new YT channel just for detecting...I'll be "POLEWAGGER" Great
I'm pretty sure that the vanishing target thing was from tiny flakes of foil (they disappear when they turn on edge)

Tiny bits of foil sounding like good targets are physics' little joke on us all. Sigh . . .

Go Up Go Down

First of all, I'd like to thank all those who contributed to my deciding on the Cibola and this forum in general for being there to help me get the detector I was looking for Smiley

NOW to the first day out, after the GB mod... OMG!! Shocked
I've discovered, a manual ground balance is an ABSOLUTE MUST with the Cibola in my area. Without it, all I would be able to do is run in disc and try to check stuff out in all metal after a hit. After carefully adjusting the GB, I'm able to sweep faster, and cover a larger area in all metal mode, (as long as the trash is low) then when I get a hit, I go to disc and see if it's a digger or not.
Now I'm finding more (deeper) nickels and dimes with this technique.
Today's finds in 3 hrs were...3 quarts, 3 dimes, 2 nickels, 9 pennies. (oldest were 2 '68 pennies)
Every day, I'm digging less trash and "seeing" what I'm hitting, MUCH better Wink
Running the Cibola in all metal mode with the GB just so, is the ticket for finding lots of stuff beyond 4-5"!
I'm so addicted to detecting, I can't wait to get off work and walk my dog so I can spend the rest of the day detecting! Cheesy
I have a lifetime list of places to detect and only so much time to find all the neat stuff I'm going to dig up! Grin

It's amazing what the manual ground balance control will do for the Cibola.
The volume control was a nice add'l addition, was going to add one to my Eldo but, have headphones with volume control already.
Might just do it for our Silver umax, sometimes my wife like to run without the headphones. The silver is pretty loud going thru the speaker, several park goers complained.....
