Does anybody have any ideas how to build an underwater altimter? Like e.g. the JW Fishers UA 2:

Well, I assume that it basically doesn't need much. Any cheap diving computer can take the depth. The read out would just need to be transported up to teh surface. Does anybody have any suggested circuits?

Regards,

Christian

Christian . To do a good job on this you should use a cheap fish - finder . You mount the transducer on the tow-fish and lead the cable to your boat . This will give you the depth under the towfish .   If you still want to be cheaper than this you may as well forget it .  Cornelius

Thank you Cornelis! I hadn't thought of using a fish finder! Thanks!

Cornelius, so do you think I could just buy an underwater sounder (echolot) mount it's sound to the towfish and have its depth reading given by the accompanying top side unit?

Regards,

Christian

Yes Christian that is the simples way .  Besides it is a professional way to do it .  Wether you have the transducer mounted to the hull of the boat or to the towfish does not make any difference .  If your cable connecting the transducer to your read-out unit is too long ( which I doubt ) you may want to recalibrate the top-side unit a bit .  Cornelius

Hello Cornelius,

so if I understood it right, this setup would give me the depth of the TOW FISH and not just the general water depth? Also what do you think wuld be the best way to mount the transducer to the fish? Putting it inside the fish would prevent it from functioning properly I assume. Could it however be mounted inside the fish when cutting out some parts of the fish body so it is fitted like a Side Scan Sonar transducer?

Thank you very much agaon for any advice you may offer.

Regards,

Christian

Don't mount the transducer in the tow fish . It will work but not as good . Especially when you use a cheaper unit . You may mount the unit on the outside pointing down , or you may mount it in a recessed area provided that this area is water tight to the rest of the towfish .  I mean that no water can leek into the tow fish . Havin it recessed with smooth the operation of the towfish  ( less resistance  to the flow of water along the tow-fish ) . The reading you will get is the depth between the tow-fish and the bottom , making sure your tow-fish is not hitting the bottom . Now you have to work on the problem that your tow-fish is  AT the level you want it to be . This can be adjusted by regulating the speed of the boat  ( helped by setting the angle of the fins on your tow-fish  ) .  If you want to go slower in order to pick up the signals instead of just going over it in a high speed you have to set the fins under a sharper angle . This will keep the fish down at lower speeds .   Cornelius
