The only good vlf that i know of is the minelab soverign or minelab x-caliber which are the same detectors. I've used a fisher 1280 cz20 and x-cal and a sov. and used tr type but has no disc in all metal on it,there are hybrids that are made in fla. on east coast but are too high 1800$ and is only a DMC nautalus in tr mode. Now the best would be a whites pulse w/disc or a eric foster whish is about the same as whites. I've used both of those too. just my thoughts.

I'm no expert by any means but if you are in fresh water you may get away with a vlf otherwise I'd look at a pi because of the salt.
Regarding headphones, you might find a small hydrophone?  (underwater speaker) instead.

If you look at the Geotech1 website and do a little research there you might find some ideas you can use. It really depends on what you are trying to accomplish. There is a good idea for an underwarer PI there. The only thing is you will need to register to see.

I used to use a round sheet of plywood with holes around the edge and tied it to a inner tube. Plywood was about 4 " larger in diameter than the inner tube. Mounted the ole White's 5DB to the board with bungee cords. Cut the cable to the loop and spliced in another 10 feet. Taped and siliconed the splice. Detector tuned just fine. If it was windy I used a short rope to keep the detector from floating away. Great rig for non moving water up to chest height.
