Go Up Go Down

Hello folks.
My pastor was given a White's Classic 5 ID unit with a very corroded battery pack. I am an electrical engineer, so he passed it to me to repair it for him. Mind you, my electrical engineering is power plants and power generation, not metal detector design. I have used white vinager to completly clean up all the corrosion, installed new batteries, aligned the contact pins between the board and battery pack, and do have voltage at the board.
But it does not power up. Does anyone have a link to a schematic or service manual (found the owners's manual) for this device?
Thank you in advance.

I've searched through every resource I have and couldn't find a schematic. But don't give up easily. There are some things to try.

Since you already have seen corrosion, we need to clean it up and the board as well. First of all, never again use vinegar to clean up corrosion. It is corrosive in itself. Use clean water and detergent. Scrub the main board with a toothbrush and then rinse it good. Rinse it again and then blow dry with a hair dryer (keep a bit of distance from the heat). Then rinse again with alcohol. If you can get it, use the 90% alcohol from a drug store. Blow dry again. Let it set for a day and inspect it with a magnifying glass. Look for corroded solder joints, copper that has been eaten through by the acids in the battery, corrosion bridging between components and also look carefully at the areas near electrolytic capacitors to see if any corrosion leaked inside. If you can get a replacement battery pack (holder) from Radio Shack, do so. Even the tiniest bit of leftover corrosion on there acts as a resistor lowering the operating voltage.

Look in the manual for a master or factory reset sequence. When you power it up, hold the ON button down instead of just pressing it. That normally resets Garrett machines to factory default.

Your machine has a microprocessor in it which powers up the boards in a specific sequence. Aside from mechanical failure (which corrosion is) the next likely failure is that computer. If that happens to be the case, just buy your pastor a new one. The replacement of those computer boards can be expensive.

I have the Classic 3 schematic.   It may have some common ground in the power set up.  Best I can do.

I don't know this machine but what I would do if I were you is take a high resolution photo of the board, then with your computer zoom in and have a good look at it. If you have no indication of the power going to the board it could very well be that the track supplying the power to the board was corroded away by the acid. Ho sorry I also wanted to welcome you to Thunting.com

All the best
Xavier

White Vinigar was a Bad move.

Cleaning Acid with Acid  or in Alkaline Batteries Alkaline with Acid is not a good Move.
