Tesoro, Detectorpro, Mirage PI (my own)

Go Up Go Down

A couple of years ago, I bout a set of gaming headsets for my XBOX 360 for $100.
Model Turtle Beach X31, they worked great watching Netflix movies or playing games.
Found another pair of them on ebay for $5 because the microphone was broken off.
Bargain, when they arrived they worked perfect. The reason I bought the second pair
was to listen to music on my computer or play some games without creating noise or music no one else liked.
They fit so comfortable as well.

The I had a great idea, wire them up for detector use, since they operate on USB power 5 volts, just need to find a compact 5 volt
power source. At the time all I could come up with was a 9 volt battery. Found some circuit plans to build a 9 to 5 volt regulator.
Built one up and had a working unit, plug the transmitter into the headphone jack and away I went. At that time I had several VLF machines to test it on. I was impressed worked well. With the optional effects button the the headset, it would give the detectors audio some interesting target responses. Now I never actually got to try them out in the field, it was winter time. They never did get outside after that, they sounded so good listening to music on my computer...................kept them hooked up to it.

Where's this leading? Just bought an upgrade version the X32's for my computer. These sound even better and have an extra tone control button. But, now I have a pair of X31's with no purpose. So I thought. Decided to try them on my PI. Holy Horsefeathers, are they fantastic. Target response clear crisp and solid. There was no signal lag and the PI gave no interference.

I am going to hunt down some recharge-ables that put out at least 4.8 volts so I don't have to use a voltage regulator. I can then keep the transmitter as compact as possible.
The X31's make a good wireless headset option.

Was kind of curious how the X32's sound on the PI, so I rigged everything up. Sounds pretty nice but the X31's do just fine.

Just picked up 3 of the X32 "Demo" wired headsets (not wireless). Got them for $6 each. Thought wow a great buy, especially with volume control, tone and effects controls. They came in today. Identical to the wireless but the controls do not work, figured as much since they was no battery compartment for the needed power to run the circuit board. Still sound great just the way they are. The controls (effects) on the wireless is what makes them sound so good on the PI.

Just to see, I opened up the ear cup with the controls. The SMT circuit board is there, not a thing hooked up to it. The Microphone on the headset is a dummy as well. Cool I thought at first, just add power and presto instant controls........WRONG. Looked at it again, not one single electronic component soldered onto the board. But, it does look like I can solder the volume control to the speaker wires.

After the recent discovery of the Turtle Beach X32 wireless headphone and how good they sound on the Mirage. Then compared the sound to the Detectorpro Amphibians (they sound great) and found they were close. The X32's compared favorably without having the Amphibians slight hollow shell sound. Wow, what a great savings over the Amphibians.

Then spotted the "wired" version of the X32, all store Demo units with controls that did not function. Grabbed up 3 pairs. Gutted one out just for the speakers which were 32ohm. Had a couple extra headphone shells kicking around plus a bunch of parts to make a new build.

I added two volume controls 5K each linear pots ( didn't have audio taper) hooked up two diodes back to back on the audio in and out wire.
Stuffed the foam back into the ear cups to silence exterior noise. Snapped everything together, and gave it a test.

First off full volume will blow your ears off. You need to find the max volume you are comfy with a target screaming when sitting on the PI search coil. The clipper diodes will not allow the volume to raise any higher. Threshold volume will be plenty loud with a clear crisp tic tic. You do not need to turn the volume past 60%. Unless you want neighbor complaints  from down the street....This set might be what those with hearing problems would find perfect at higher volume levels.

I don't know what the speaker brand is they sure sound the best on the PI, not too high pitched and not to low pitched.
Tried them on my White's VLF machine and they do sound better than my Killer Bee's.

I do believe I duplicated how the DP Amphibians worked, almost identical sound, less the hollowness and instead of using the Piezo as DP used speakers. Think I will get a few more of these X32 headsets for the speakers.

By the way these sound so good on my PI and VLF machines that I replaced my speakers in my Killer Bee's with the X32 speakers.
Like night and day.

Also, found a 5 volt rechargeable battery for the transmitter - wireless version. Just ordered one.

I have a Dongle thing that only uses two AAA batteries to send CD music to a FM radio.  A old pair of FM Radio headphones works most well.   No Wires, No Tangle.  No Lag in sound that you can't deal with.
