Go Up Go Down

I was looking around for some ferrite to wind a probe coil for my P.I. detector.
Looked in my junk box and found an old ferrite aerial from a radio.
It still had its coils on it and I decided to measure them with a meter in case any came near to the 1.5 ohm of my standard coil.
I found one at the end of the ferrite that measured 1.55 ohms.
Lashed it up to the detector and couldn't believe the result!
It works PERFECTLY as a probe!
I couldn't have specified anything better!
It's sensitive to small coins from about 4 inches from the front face and about half an inch at the sides.
That makes it highly directional, which is exactly what I wanted.
It also gives a lovely rising tone as you get nearer to the target until the detector really sings from about half an inch..... perfect!
Just a few pence worth of plasic tube and I'm done!

BTW - Thanks to Cornelius for suggesting using ferrite rod!

Paul Thank you for trying out the PI probe  . It is sometimes hard to convince people about something you found out by accident . You gave some of these people proof of what was suggested .  Cornelius

It's not heavy at all and is ratehr small in size. I had built a similar probe in the past and it is a great design. It is very senstive and a great tool. Borehole pI probes are based on the same design.

Well done Paul!

Regards,

Christian

The photo is about 4 times lifesize.
It will fit in a piece of half inch plastic pipe with room to spare.
At most it weighs in at about an ounce.
I have compared it this morning with a friends "Sunray" probe ........ Mines better by far!
(His detector isn't a P.I. though)
He was well annoyed as he'd just paid about ?150 for the sunray a couple of weeks back.
 Great

Paul I can see you smile when you discovered that your  $ 1.50 unit did a better job than the  $ 150.- unit  Grin    Cornelius

Bit of an update,
Cased up the "probe" (the black end is the "hot" end, the threaded part at the other the cable connector)
Just to prove how good this is I pulled a tiny tudor farthing from an 8" hole with this easy!
Both the Sunray and a Whites bullseye had problems locating it!
That's an American dime next to it for size comparison..... tiny coin!

I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your tests and posting the results . This is something that anybody could do if they just wanted to spend some time thinking about it .  The results I had with these probes are just the same as your results  . This probe is better than any commercial produced unit . Besides with the right cable it can be lowered into the smallest borehole . This is impossible with the other units .  Regards  Cornelius

Thanks Cornelius,
Makes you wonder how much profit the like of Sunray,White and Garret et al are making!
Most of the "stand alone" probes as far as I can see are nothing more than glorified "$10 nail finders"!
