don't put mu switch then try, if your dp is functioning.

the only adjstment u may done is the trimmer pot at the pulse generator the 556, but it will be adjusted if the dp is detecting the metal, in my case, i have no oscilloscope, dvm, frequency counter. you can see in my recent post i only use analog volt meter the cheaper type and my computer, i live in a very poor place w/c electronic store is 130km from my residence. so i make it sure the schematic is functional before i construct the circuit. that's why i always study the schematic every time i made circuits to be sure it will not fail.but sometimes other circuit will fail.

when i constructed the dp,(my 1st dp) i review the schematic (i posted) then i picked the parts list in schematic, when the parts is completed (the capacitors are mylar type coz no high quality parts in my country) i made the pcb (from eugene52 the green one i posted) and noticed my double sided pcb was made in 2 pcb glue together to simulate double sided coz no double sided pcb available in the store.every time i inserted the parts in the pcb i check the connection from schematic after it was all soldered i wired it to controls (5controls 1 reset switch)  and search coil 40cm 23t #24 awg then power it with 12 volt mc mf battery 7amperes (no fuse that time) the circuit whistle wildly (coz no volume control) i pressed the reset switch (3secconds) the meter deflects full, when switch released deflects back to zero (no ticking sound) all controls at maximum (5controls) search coil lying in the floor (100 percent no metal rebar on the floor) i get my long nose plier and put near the coil the machine tickling sound appear the meter deflects to full then i know the circuit is working now, then i slowly adjusted the pot trimmer back&forth beside 556 it fine tunes the tickling sound more sensitive (frequency adjst) then the dp is detecting metal. i subjected the dp in different actual test (ground buried metals) in larger targets w/out problem. in your part, u r very lucky u have all the metering equipments, but the best is the actual test.

XR-71 here I come!

Well I finally did it! I bought the parts to make my first metal detector; Eugene52's XR-71 from his parts list and schematics.

You may have read my post about being electronically challenged and that I'm really only smart enough to write the emails and maybe solder? Well I can now proudly add PCB making to that long list of accomplishments!

It's not quite finished yet, my buddy (the brains of the operation) says to use a tinning product on the copper traces to prevent oxidation; once that's done I'll post a pic so you guys can heap praise upon me. lol (or any constructive criticism)     (I'll accept any prayers also for what I'm about to try and do)

Question? Do I need to find a metal project box or will a plastic box do? My buddy seems concerned about EMI (electro-magnetic interference) because we intend to attach our DP/XR-71's to our ATV's and drag the coil behind us (in hopes of finding those elusive space rocks)

We just had one explode overhead last November! Lit up the sky like a thousand welders! Actually more! As I remember this thing was measured in terawatts, which is like the US power consumption in just seconds. I've seen transformers blow before but this was by far the brightest night light I've ever seen.

I looked towards the city expecting to see a mushroom cloud!!! LOL

It was one of those things that made me jump out of my seat literally, and blast out the back door for a better look!
And here's the best part? Some reports suggested that it fell right smack dab in the area we were hunting in last summer!
Personally I'm skeptical about the trajectory, but if I find anything out there, you guys will know about it.

You can still see some good video clips at;

Anyway, EMI, any thoughts about plastic vs. metal? Metal is way more expensive than plastic and until real estate prices come back?I'm poor!!! (If only I could find that space rock! Huumm, space rock =$$$$$) Which came first the space rock or the metal box?

Yes, I could shield the inside of the plastic box and it won't be easy but do you think I need to?

Thanks guys! Vr4mike

ram,- do you think single side pcb and the double side pcb are the same result of deep detecting ?
-you use 10000 uf or one 4700 uf on single side pcb?
many Thanks agains........ Wink

yes same deep capability only double sided pcb is more professional look and compact and tough.

i used 10000uf/35volts.

it depends to your target, dp is deeper good for big and deep burried metals, eg 6ftx6ftx50mm metal at 20ft.(easily detected) buried bulldozer at 50ft (easily detected)(large square coils)

1x1mtr coil=16turns #24 awg cu. or try insulated wire 3.5mm outside dia with 2mm cu wire inside, with resistance 2ohms. (for circuit, the best is all metal enclosure for dp).

40cm round coil=23turns #24awg

don't use dp in detecting rings or coins.=very poor result. maybe very small coil and higher frequency transmitter can give good result.(i din't try it)
