The note was on the top of the coins and made it quite clear to me who buried it. Looked to me like a couple of kids who just watched Pirates of the Caribbean to me. Good fun for them, a great find for me. The only one that I can recall ever reburying after I found it. It would have been completely heartless of me to take it.

A couple of weeks ago, I was in a shop here called The Reject Shop where I found the exact same small chest for sale. I bought one for my wife to keep her most often used jewelry in and she loves it. Every time I look at it, I am reminded of my treasure find.

What a great find and story. Reading this makes me smile inside. I'm sure if the kids went back and recovered their chest and told their tale of the new coins few will believe them thinking that imagination got the best of them.

Thanks for posting.

Glad I read the post.

HH

That's so cool ! You definitely did the right thing. Imagine their faces when they dig that back up and see that another pirate added to their booty ! Smiley

Excellent find with a thoughtful ending. I would have done exactly what you did.

"I added two $2.00 coins I had just found to their booty and dropped it back into the ground "

What you did is really nice and shows dectetorists are not only looters but can be respectable.

How Cool is that.

It could be part of the GeoCaching game.

I was thinking the same thing.  Perhaps there needs to be a new catagory added to geocaching called "Buried Treasure".  GPS coordinates gets you to the general location but your MD is needed to actually pinpoint.  Hmmm! Interesting concept.  I can see little pirate treasures buried in sandboxes all over the world.

Great story.  At first I thought maybe you had really stumples on a real pirates hoard.

When I dug up that little chest and looked inside, I was touched by the children's imagination. They probably fancied themselves real pirates. It warmed this cold, dark heart of mine.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Such a great story GD. Thank you for sharing and the great idea. It's nice to imagine the look on the face of "Francis and Melody" when they dug it up and found the new additions  Shocked.
They're off and hiding chests all over the city now ;-)

Cheers,
Barb

A great, heart warming story, GD!  Clapp  Thanks for sharing it.  Maybe you aren't the cold, black-hearted pirate you believe yourself to be!  Fight  Anway, a wonderful story that made me smile.   Shame Takes me back to more innocent times when I was a kid and thought I was a pirate!  What great fun to have your story to tell about the pirate's chest.   Detecting
