The Holy Lance?

(1/1)

Historybookboy:
The Holy Lance (sometimes called the "spear of destiny") is supposed to be the legendary pole arm that pierced the side of Jesus at his crucifixion.

'? but one of the soldiers pierced his side with a lance, and immediately there came out blood and water.' John 19:34

I've heard that when this thing is thrown, it can never miss it's target. It is also "so deadly that a man would die if his hair was cut with it". Also, when you kill someone with it you supposedly: 1) Are granted immortality or 2) Consume the life force of your victim. The Roman soldier who pierced Jesus was a guy called St. Longinus (meant to be the soldier who proclaims Christ as the son of God). Eventually (this bit is myth) Longinus figured out he was immortal, slit his neck, giving the impression that: 1)You only die if you commit suicide or 2) You only die if you die unnaturally.

The Holy Lance seems a pretty cool treasure with great archeological. But don't go after it hoping to be immortal! After all, some who seek immortality know not what to do on a Sunday afternoon!

Oh yeah, in the video game series "Assassins Creed" the Holy Lance is one of the "Pieces of Eden". One of many treasures created by a master race only called: "Those who came before" who create human kind.

This is an awesome thing, but I can't imagine it being real. What do you think?

 Later, it passes into many
hands, arriving--supposedly--into Hitler's possession at
the start of the Second World War.  Near the end of that
war, the story goes, General Patton discovers the Spear in
a bunker under Nuremberg, realizes what it is, and at that
very moment, Hitler commits suicide and the U.S. succeeds
Germany as the new World Power...because it now holds the
Spear.
Its a great story, but do I believe it 50/50

Hello All

Strange enough there is at least 3 places claim to have the real spear.

1.The Holy Lance of Echmiadzin better known as the Vatican Lance

The lance was found in Echmiadzin, Armenia, was discovered during the First Crusade. In 1098 the crusader Peter Bartholomew reported that he had a vision in which St. Andrew told him that the Holy Lance was buried in St. Peter's Cathedral in Antioch. After much digging in the cathedral, a lance was discovered. This was considered a miracle by the crusaders who were able to rout the Muslim army besieging the city and decisively capture Antioch. Some Early Modern scholars (e.g. Odorico Raynaldi in Annales ecclesiastici and the Bollandists) believed that this lance afterwards fell into the hands of the Turks and was in fact the lance that Bayazid II sent to Pope Innocent and is now in the Vatican.

2: Vienna Lance (Hofburg spear)

The Holy Roman Emperors had a lance of their own, attested from the time of Otto I (912-973). In 1000 Otto III gave Boleslaw I of Poland a replica of the Lance at the Congress of Gniezno. In 1084 Henry IV had a silver band with the inscription "Nail of Our Lord" added to it. This was based on the belief that this was the lance of Constantine the Great which enshrined a nail used for the Crucifixion. In 1273 it was first used in the coronation ceremony. Around 1350 Charles IV had a golden sleeve put over the silver one, inscribed "Lancea et clavus Domini" (Lance and nail of the Lord). In 1424 Sigismund had a collection of relics, including the lance, moved from his capital in Prague to his birth place, Nuremberg, and decreed them to be kept there forever. This collection was called the Reichskleinodien or Imperial Regalia.

It was this Lance that general Patton recovered from the Nazis. Which is now in Vienna.

3: The Crackow Lance

Another lance has been preserved at Krakow, Poland, since at least the 1200s. However, German records indicate that it was a copy of the Vienna lance. Emperor Henry II had it made with a small sliver of the original lance. Another copy was given to the Hungarian king at the same time.

It should be noted all lances are not from the first century AD. It is interesting that a nail in the Vienna lance is from the first century but the lance its self was from the 7th century.

It seems those Wiley old monks had a very busy religious relic industry for the pilgrims going on back in those days! ;)

How right you are Hardluck another example is Glastonbury claimed to be the burial place where they buried King Arthur however Arthur died in AD 579 when Glastonbury was not even built. That happened in AD 900 so theres a discrepency there however English Heritage collects millions from Gullible tourists who know no different.
The monks of yesterday got money from pilgrims today its all done by the English Government hmmm another reason they dont want the real truth about King Arthur to come out.  Think of the lost revenue and how many people would lose jobs for supporting lies.

Hello all

Yes Allan that was another great example. Nearly all the great monasteries of Britain and Europe saw the economic opportunities to encourage pilgrims to stay at their monasteries. All claimed either fragments of the true cross, Thorns from the crown of thorns, nail, blood tears, the lance etc..or relics of a saint.

All these bits of relics was used as bait to attract pilgrim to their monastery. In some respects it was an early form of tourism. And the devious monks cash in on it.

Hardluck  ;)

Alan Hassell:
I often ponder and wonder how many genuine tourists would by pass Glastonbury if they all knew it was just a huge con to raise money for the English Establishment.  If anyone wants to try to publish my story about Glastonbury to travel and tourist magazines in an attempt to make the public aware of the fraudulent English Heritage and Government go ahead you have my blessing hehehe
