Over the years I have found a lot of stones that were just that "Stones".
I recently found something that was found in direct context with some artifacts (four that day) about 3000 YBP in age.
While digging at a "Pay to dig" site I came across a piece of Flint that appeared to have a deer hoof print on it. Outstanding patina it has been polished by the Brazos river.
Some NA found it and took it home.
I believe they thought the same thing!!!!!! Looks like a deer hoof print!!!!

Perhaps four weeks later I found a scraper that had one of the same anomalies on it.
The NA who knapped it into a scrapper left the dished out area on the specimen and perhaps used it as a thumb hold. It does fit, as a thumb hold, and would do the trick as well as any scraper would.

As it turns out, it is one of the best scrapers in my collection.

That's wicked cool! In Indiana we have a mother lode of limestone and sandstone, with gajillions of fossils, but larger ones are somewhat rare.

Well Kevin thank you for your reply.
Apparently you are the only one who thinks highly enough to reply to my post.
It was posted almost a year ago and yours is the only one.
I am  native Texan and my wife is from a small town outside South Bend Ind.
Although this specimen is not truly a fossil I do collect fossils and I am very aware of the potential for fossils in Ind.
I do not often post on THunting any more because of lack of interest in fossils and Native American artifacts here.
So very few replies is highly discouraging.
I do swing a metal detector as a matter of fact I own 6 of them and have been doing it since the late 60's.
Recently there has been an onslaught of new people doing it that the finds are thinning out so much
most of the time I only find where someone has already been there.
The days of finding gold two or three times on a weekend have come to an end.
Now back to my find, apparently when the "Indian" found this thing they too thought it looked like a deer hoof footprint and kept it.
It was found in direct context with some other strange rounded and slightly polished obscure stones.
It just may have been part of a mystic collection gathered and used in a ritual.
There have been several other phenomenal finds there over the years but this was my "catch" one.
The scraper was an added bonus and is one of the best in my collection.
I have been collecting NA artifacts all of my life and fossils as well.
Member of arrowhead collecting hunting sites and fossil web sites as well.
I am a mentor on the Arrowheads.com web site and enjoy being part of that group as much or more so than treasure hunting.
Most of the treasure sites have sections where fossils and arrowheads are considered treasure but as you can
tell there are so very few that consider it treasure that they don't even come to this section or if they do they do not reply.
Again thank you for your reply.
