Another newbie from northern Ohio here. Found this sight through Twitter. Mostly hitting parks and fields and have found a few cheap rings and lots of clad but nothing real exciting so far. Waiting for a little rain to soften up the hard clay around here.

Will be looking forward to learning a lot from this site!

Bob

Welcome aboard, mate. For the record, I do have a purple car! It's a dandy, too.

Tabdog, I use the Garrett Master Hunter CX. It's the older version but not much has changed. Maybe the soil I am digging in has some effect. If the target is beyond 8 or 9 inches, I don't get any response (if I use the headphones I get readings that are erratic and incomprehensible. The soil where I am doing most of my detecting now is highly mineralized and it's giving me fits. Angry  Angry

What do you suggest? Thanks,
Ken

Hay Ken,

Depth is a hard thing to get a consistant answer answer for.
When faced with highly mineralized and/or very conductive
soil, depth becomes a matter of what can contend with the
conditions.

I do not fully understand the different Garrett Master Hunter
CX Models. They are said to have automatic ground balance.
On older Garretts, they would have their own kind of automatic
ground balance, that actually did adjust to ground conditions.
Some of them worked better than others. Later, "automatic
ground balance" came to mean, "factory pre-set ground balance"
with garrett and all the other makers as well.

Now, automacic ground balance neans factory per-set.

If your Garrett does not adjust to ground conditions well, you
are at a dis-advantage in bad ground.

DD coils can help most detectors in bad ground conditions.

The older Whites like the 5900 DI Pro are proven to perform
under such conditions. They can still be purchased. I think.

I would value Christians opinion more than mine on this.

I hate to go off on machines that I have only read about.

Tesoro makes a great little machine, but the Lobo and
maybe the Sand Shark are the only ones that can do real
well in bad ground. I know that people will disagree with
that. I believe that only a few tesoroes work really well
in such conditions. User knowledge helps here.

But, it is common for people to be able to detect an
aluminum can that deep. Bad soil will change that for
most machines.

Maybe someone in your area can help.

Call a dealer. Find one who detects in your area. He
will have info, and you may even find someone else
that can help also.

You can post the question on the forum here.

Good luck and

Happy Hunjtin,

tabdog

TabDog, with the older Garrett Master Hunter series, including my GroundHog, the automatic ground balance was accomplished with a time delay and a constant pinpoint mode. It required motion to work and when you used it, the depth diminished somewhat due to the fact that it would detune as it got over the target. But, the ground became absolutely silent. I had a GroundHog without automatic ground balance and I could approximate having it by pressing and holding the pinpoint button. I later gave that unit to a friend who still uses it today.

There is a 10 turn tuning potentiometer for the manual ground balance. If you are getting spotty balancing, the book said to turn it a full turn left from the balance point. I still like my GroundHog for work in the goldfields.

GD1950,
There's a delay before my Garrett obtains the proper ground balance but the soil varies so much from one place to the next I am always re-balancing. I rely a lot on the pinpointing mode of my machine. It seems to more readily identify a good target than just the regular all metal mode. There's no potentiometer for fine-tuning the ground balance and that's why I have to re-balance the machine frequently by either turning it off and then back on again or using the combination of buttons to re-balance while the machine is still on.

Tabdog, I think maybe I WILL post this issue so maybe all of us that have  experienced this problem can discuss our own experiences and maybe get "enlightened" a little.  Smiley

Sorry Bob, I meant to welcome you earlier and it slipped what little mind I have left   Idiot so please accept my apology and  Welcome to the FORUM!  Wink

Thank you GD and David.

I was hoping a Garrett user would help.

I just do not understand.

I know they are good machines. I just have

never used them.

I hope more info comes in.

If Kin is facing the conditions that it seems

he has, he will need good advise.

Thanks again guys,

Tabdog
