Go Up Go Down

Just spent a week in the fabulous Bendigo gold fields. On the first day I got a massive 0.2 gram nugget within 5 metres of where the car was stopped.  Thought it was going to be a beaut week but other than a pile of lead shot, hot rocks and shotgun cartridges it was a bust.  However it was a great trial for my new home built detector. The detector is a highly modified Hammerhead.  I have found that I can modify the detector to tuneable notch filter that can accurately discriminate. Wish me luck.

Hiya All, Great to get so many responses. The Hammerhead was third machine that I have made. I don't know a lot about detecting.  My nephews came over to Bendigo from New Zealand a couple of years ago and spent some time learning at one of the Bendigo shop exercises.  When I heard they were coming over again I started a series of builds that resulted in the modified Hammerhead. I have put a notch filter in the beast to discriminate ferrous and a meter to indicate the battery charge.  I am running 9.6 volts with NMhydride batteries. I am now pleased that I can find gold so I will be into improving the design with a DSP circuit.  A mate of mine got me half pregnant by describing the operation so it looks like I will be head down and bum up for a while figuring out how to get it to work.  I will take a digital storage shot of the full coil flyback with various targets and see if I can nut out how to detect/discriminate on the targets that I found over the past week.  I didn't realise how exhausting it was working in the heat and dust of the bush.  Those oldtimers must have had solid ones to be able to work in the heat with so little water. I hope that answers your questions.  I will let you know how it proceeds.

Hi again,

I have noticed that I did not respond to Homefire.  I presume that you are asking the Pulse repetition rate that I arbitrarily set at 1000c/s.  I was getting 420 volts back emf with a passive pull-down on the gate of the IRF830.  I also got a lot of response from hot rocks but this was minimized when I moved.  Maybe I should have stayed where I was and put up with the false targets but maybe found some more gold. It was interesting scratching around in the dust and dirt with a bunch of ants and then Magically the gleam of the tiny nugget caught my eye.  I will have to section up the design so that I can work on one part of the circuit at a time.   The wild life was interesting - a Hare bolted past me at one stage. There were Kangaroos bouncing around and a few Brown snakes.
