Paul here from Glendale, Arizona.

I finally got a "modern" detector this past December (White's Classic 5ID).  I talked my wife into joining a detector club with me and got her a Bounty Hunter (since replaced with a Garrett GTA 550).   Neither of us have found much worth mentioning, but we are enjoying the exercise and looking forward to more detecting here when it gets cooler and in Florida when we go there in December.

Welcome to the forums! You are in good company here. There are so many people here that you're bound to find someone in your own neighborhood or in Florida when you travel. Arizona has some really great old west places for relic hunting. My recollection is that the pioneers were slobs dropping metal pieces everywhere on their property. Good thing they didn't have pull tabs back then.

They definitely left a lot of junk (read trash).  My wife and I have been on two club hunts with Arizona Treasures Unlimited.  One hunt was to an old goldcamp just west of the Superstition Mountains.   The other was to an old Rail Road town.   Both resulted in a whole lot of junk metal (scraps of roofing tin, cans, nails, spikes, etc).  My personal best find for the two trips was an old Gem Safety Razor handle that was in really good condition.   My usually manages to come up with the more interesting finds.   So far, though, we haven't found any coins worth mentioning and no jewelry.

Hang in there. An old friend of mine, now gone, used to believe that he was more likely to find small caches of coins in the Arizona desert than anywhere else. His theory was held up by two facts. He found a lot of them and he mostly hunted in those deserts. He believed that the people who roamed the early west were planners. They'd bury small pokes here and there in case they needed them in the future. Not much. A few coins or a small bag of gold nuggets. Just enough to keep them going.

If you are into prospecting, consider joining the Gold Prospector's Association of America. The GPAA has a few claims in Arizona which you can use as a member. They also have a great magazine every month and a regular TV show on the Outdoor channel.

There's nothing finer than yellow at the bottom of the riffles in your gold pan. Welcome aboard, Graywolfs.

Hay Paul,

Welcome from Arkansas. It is a great hobby.
If you are only after the big one, it can be tough.

But if you can enjoy it for the great hobby it is,
treasure will come.

You can hold a peice of history in your hand.

You can find a valuable object that will make
you weak in the knees.

But, it usually does not happen right off.

That helps to keep our numbers down somewhat,,, lol

Someone needs ta slap old Tabdog up side tha head
soes he will stop jawin.

Happy Huntin,

Tabdog

Hi Paul,
I am in West Phoenix, I've been digging out my old detectors, and discovered one has given up the ghost. and looking to get something to replace it,  so I can go out to the beaches this winter.
Hope you find some great reading on this site. there's some great people, more intelligence here than where I work, it seems. but still, a good place to hang out.
