No I didn't know it was a problem to buy detectors in Israel. I even started to say, last night, that it might be easier / faster to just buy one instead of making.  Hmm - this is probably silly, but can't you buy online?  Glad you liked the old gun story - it's one of my favorites. Sue

Fsss, I'm beginning to grasp why building a detector is the smart approach. Doesn't seem fair that the country can tax you, take what you find and be able to search your home, too, just for detecting.

If you were digging historical artifacts, I suppose. For old coins and items people have lost - that just isn't right. Maybe the government doesn't understand and you should explain hobby to them. What do people do when they lose a ring in their yard? Here, often, they contact someone with a detector. Sue

U are right, yet I can understand the gov. too. Israel is a country whith a lot of archeologicl sites actually the whole country is one big site - thus the try in a way to keep all the antics in the country.
by building my own detector I can hunt with my kids near my house. and maybe I can give them something more interesting to do then just sit and watch TV at home...

There would be the temptation to see what is just a little deeper instead of concentrating near the surface.  Smiley Worldwide, kids get excited when it comes to thunting - great family activity!
Wishing you the best of luck Detecting and hope to hear about your finds.
