Hello, I am an American doing business here in Tanzania.

This country is very rich in gold, diamond, ruby and the only place on earth to find tanzanite.
I have the opportunity every now and then to travel to remote areas, so I thought I start a new hobby.

A friend of mine recently purchased some land and one week later he found gold eight inches from the surface.
He's now in the mining business.

That may have influenced my interest a bit, but I think it just sounds like fun.
If all I find are old coins that suits me just fine.
And if I get into mining that would suit me even more. Cool

Thanks everyone for your warm welcome... I'll be sure to post any finds I make.

But first things first, I need plans to make a detector.
Buying one is out of the question, shipping fee is bad enough but the import tax here kills ya.
I've looked though the boards and some designs, but I'm not sure what the best one would be.

I need something that goes deep, and discriminates between different types of metals.
there's a lot of iron in the soil here due to volcanic activity.
Is it possible to detect one metal and ignore others?

Hay Allodium,

The PI designs do not discriminate at all,
but I think they are less complicated.

The VLF designs do discriminate different
metals.

The least expensive VLF machines have
a simple discriminator.

It will disc out iron first.
Then aluminum foil and gold.
Then lead, aluminum pull tabs, nickles and gold.
Then modern clad pennies and maybe zink and gold.
Then copper. It may not get copper.

For a little more money you can get one that will
select a small area that it wil discriminate.

That is called notching.

But it aint perfect. You got practice a lot with any
of them. It is a skill you have to aquire.

Hope that helps some,

Tabdog
