Hi,

My 12 yr old son and I live in the Dallas,Tx area and we are interested in metal detecting.

I am looking for areas where we can search for old coins or relics. I would like to be able to use this hobby as an educational tool for my son and not just away to find lost coins at our local parks.

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated !

We dont even own a metal detector yet so if anyone has any suggestions on that subject that will be great also.

Donnie

My kids are interested in anything I dig up, and I do mean ( I dig up ) they dont have as much patience when it comes to searching really. They play until I dig something they look at it and are very interested then they want to go back to playing. But my kids are younger than 12. You tube has alot of good videos one of my favorites are the videos from GADIRTFISHING check them out if you havent allready. Good luck. Tate

Hello and welcome to the forum.

The choice of a metal detector will depend on the available budget.

Anyway, you can find treasure (and treasure is everything that's valuable to you ) about everywhere.

For around 150 $ you can buy a very good detector, a Tesoro compadre. Not only is it an excellent unit, to my eyes better than any digital detector in the price category, but it is light enough to be used by kids.

Sure their interest will raise every time they hear it beeping.

HH

My eight year old son has a little cheap detector.  He too looses interest until the goodies starts to show up.!  Ha!

Hello Donnie! Also a warm hearted Welcome from me! As the others allready suggested your budget will determine what detector to buy. Good detectors to start with are the Garrett Ace 150 or Tesoro Compadre. Youc an also check for them 2nd hand on eBay.com

As far as good hunting places go there have been some good suggestions, too.

I am sure you and your son will enjoy this thrilling and eductaional new hobby.

Best wishes,

Christian

Minelab Safari & the Garrett 250

Welcome Donny,

Well the Garrett would be my choice.  I bought the 250 for my 7 year old daughter and she can use it fine.  As for the attention span of children, what I would suggest is that you get yourself a roll of quarters and just when you think they are loosing intrest, drop one.  It worked for me!

My dad lives a little north of where your at in Broken Bow, OK.  My suggestions on where to search your area would be look up old Army records to find old Indian Forts.  There was alot of that in your area within a half hours drive.  Also see if you can find the place where the Oklahoma Land Rush started.  Also you can find old Railway stations, I know there was alot of those around there.

Let me know what you find,
Shawn Detecting
