Tabdog
I have never been detecting in the forest park owing to the fact my walking abilities are limited due to ill health. I would presume permission if it were forthcoming would be required from either Down Dictrict Council or the National Trust. i am not sure who has responsibility for the forest but if it is the latter you will never get permission. Sorry I can not be of any more help.

Further to my reply to tabdog it is many years since I have walked the Mournes. I do not think metal detectorists would be very welcome in what is considered an area of outstanding natural beauty. There were problems a number of years back when the annual Mourne wall walk used to be run. Corrosion, damage etc. to the wall and its surroundings. These activities have been seriously curtailed. As for metal detecting in general in N. Ireland no problems whatsoever if you stay away from Historic Monuments and always seek landowners permission before entering. Hope this helps. Clapp

I have health problems that limit my ability to
walk very far, or extend myself too much.

Metal detecting is my exersize.

Northern Irland sounds like a great place to metal
detect. There is a lot more history that can be
recovered with a metal detector. The North American
Indians were more or less in the Stone Age until
Spanish explorers came and traided metal to the
Indians. That slowly began in the 1400s. It was much
later until it had much effect on Indians in the area I
live in.

It was not until the early 1800s that white man started
settleing in, what is now our State capital, Little Rock,
Arkansas.

My oldest find is stone. I found it about  35 years ago.
It is a 8,000 to 10,000 year old Dalton point. It is what
you would call an arrow head. It is what I call a find of
a life time,

Looking forward to your post. I hope you can come up
with something really cool,

Tabdog

Hi Martin, from a guy with family near Colraine, get a beach detector (Preferably a salt water one, PI are good), and get down to the beaches for some of those gold and silver rings  Cheesy There?s lots to find in the water where they?ve been bathing, and on the beach where the?ve been sitting  :Smiley
