Hello from Connecticut. Headed back to CT from the UP of Michigan. Sounds like you are already narrowing your machine choices. Salt water, sand, beach, all speaks to a small list of machines and a submersible narrows it even more. I currently have around 6 machines and 2 I really like for on the beach, salt or fresh and in the water are the White's Surmaster Dual Field and the Fisher CZ-21. Both will do what your looking for. The Dual Field is an excellent waterproof PI detector and thus does not have the ability to discriminate from iron. It will find small stuff deep but if the area is full of small trash your going to be doing a lot of digging Grin   The CZ-21 can discriminate and is an excellent detector and fully submersible and designed for diving also. There is also the Excalibur that I don't know much about. The Sand Shark is a super beach PI detector. I'm sure the gurus here will come out of the woodwork with more info. Don't forget the used department. You can save some money and still get a good machine.

You will need a good sand scoop. That's another topic Wink     (I use the Stealth 720I hybrid w/carbon pole.)

Do you guys find that a vertical or slanted scoop handle works best ?

I use the straight shaft handle with an a 20 degree angled scoop. When the handle is vertical the scoop is at my perfect digging position. Pushing forward and down with your foot, the scoop moves forward and digs. Then pulling the handle back tilts the scoop to hold the sand while lifting. I sometimes use a handle bolted on the handle near the scoop to leverage lifting. I'm not sold on that though.
