Go Up Go Down

Hey folks,

I'm 23yo from Perth, Western Australia. I bought a basic metal detector a few years ago (Garrett ACE150) just to some beach combing.
But I've been researching into shipwrecks along the west coast which has sparked my interest so I'm getting back into metal detecting again. I was going to just go straight into it and buy a GPX5000, but I tend to learn about things better when I understand them fundamentally so I'm just going to build a Hammerhead for now.

I work for our state's water utility provider as an ROV Pilot Technician and Geospatial Analyst and I'm currently study Geology full-time. I'm a coin collector, and basically anything old, historic and interesting.
This forum helped a lot when I was researching what homemade MD design would be best.
Seems like a friendly place thats well maintained and quite active Smiley
Although I tend to read a lot of different forums this is the first I've register to, so please excuse me if I have poor etiquette.
Looking forward to future discussions with you all.

Regards

Cal

Go Up Go Down

Welcome, Cal, from a former Perth resident. I moved to the US in October of 2011 and now live in Connecticut where I grew up. I loved searching the beaches in WA and often came home with over $100 on a Monday following a hot weekend. My dog and I would work the beaches before sunrise and be ready to go home by noon. I usually started around 3:00am.

Work slow, work very slow. Don't believe for a moment that the entire beach can be searched in one day. To plan, go on a weekend day for a stroll and make note of the places where people hang out. Go there first and work slow. Very slowly. Did I mention that you need to work slow? To be quite frank, I would see other detectorists and they'd complain about how overworked and empty the beaches were. They'd have 6 to 10 coins and be swinging their machines like it was a weed whacker (whipper snipper to you, mate). I'd go right behind them and pull out $10.00 or so and smile inwardly as I looked at them a half mile up the beach still swinging away like they're chopping wheat.

As to shipwrecks, start reading the works fo Hugh Edwards and Max Cramer. Hugh was a reporter and later an author. His book Islands of Angy Ghosts is a classic. He and Max were professional wreck divers and their books are worth gold. I also have a few obscure books on WA wrecks and when I find them (still not unpacked) I'll let you know. I won't be needing them again.

It's great to see a youngster here. Not too many around and the older folks are starting to drop off their perches. Happens. Anyway, welcome aboard. I've added you to my buddy list so when I find those books, I can locate you here.

Cal, I just noted on Facebook that you are a friend of Matt's over there. I've known him since he was 13 or so. My goodness, has it really been that long?

Wow thank you so much.
And thanks for the tips. I tend to be a bit gung-ho like that to. I'll definitely slow down now and enjoy the scenery more.
I started noticing the surfers would put there keys and loose change in the rock holes which are full of sand. I find more hordes of coins in there than on the beach generally. So thats great advise to notice where the people tend to hang around Smiley

Hi Woody2822

Welcome to the forum, seems like you are going to be building your own detector, if you do you'll find that there is nothing more satisfying than to find an old coin with your home made machine. You'll gain much experience from it too.
