New to MDing, learning Ace 250, digging a lot of bottle caps and pull tabs, going to Rio Hondo Tx next winter and wondering about detecting South Padre, any tips would be appreciated.

South Padre Island: Metal Detectors
Possession or use of metal detectors is prohibited in the park, in order to preserve cutural resources that are protected by the National Park Service. If you come upon a cultural artifact, please note the location of the object and notify a park ranger.

There were countless wrecks around South Padre and one are in particular where nice coins would show up.  I remember back in the mid 80's i did some extensive research on the dredging activities of the Army Corps of Engineers targeting the areas that were thought responsible for the treasure that was being found.  The ACOE was using hopper barges to move material offshore and i went through a FOI process and was able to secure records foe where the barges dropped the loads from that particular area.  I gave the information to a professional hunter in Boulder Colorado and I believe he pursued it with some other folks.  Oh a good sidebar.  I was sitting in his office when he received a call from one of his associates.  They claimed to have found the Central America off the Carolina Shore... this was back in the mid-80's... you know how long it was before that news broke...
