Welcome to the forum Povey !
Nice to hear that someone actually watches those archaeologists and makes sure they do their jobs right!
I'm an amateur Archie myself!
I've used both the GEMS Runabout and a ground radar unit. The Gems is an advanced magnetometer with four sensors in the scan bar. The ground radar unit I used had a 100mghz antenna for a depth of 100foot.
You might want to check the soil first for clay as the GPR will not penetrate clay.
The more advanced unit is the Super Sting resistivity unit. It travels about 200 foot down and is much more fool proof when it comes to the read out as it injects a voltage into the ground and reads the resistance.
You can also use a VLF unit too as it only requires general readings while standing in key points of your surveyed area and is relatively cheap to have done by a local GEO company.
About $1200 bucks.
Again, Welcome.
