Just acquired a used MD 3080 and found this site when I was looking it up in a search engine.  Turns out one of your forums was discussing the merits of this model on Feb 25th.  Thought I would join and see I can learn a thing or two about this hobby.

Thanks for the welcome - just discovered Leslie the Bluenoser in going through a few of the topics.  I think he is about an hour drive from me.  If you can point me in the right direction for trying to find out more about my model of detector.  Appreciate it is a cheap one but it will get me started and I can always buy bigger and better (or should I say more sensitive) if I find I enjoy this.  The guy I bought it from is supposed to send me the manual in the mail but that may not happen.  Sonya

Hello Sonya,

welcome to our forum. I hope you will enjoy it. Well, I don't want to put your enthusiam down but don't be disappointed if you don't find much at first. The MD series of detectors are unfortunately very very poor and will likely miss 95% of your potential targets - which may be frustrating at times. To get decent results you should best look into a used Garret Ace 150 or Tesoro compadre whoch sell for about USD 100 - 125.00 preowned.

Maybe try to meet with one of the fellow detectorists in your area and team up with him for a hunt.

Best wishes and happy detecting,

Christian

Hi Sonya - welcome to the forum and the surprising hobby of metal detecting. You have to start somewhere - the important thing is you've started!! I'm not at all familiar with your detector, but surely you'll be able to find some coins or rings near the surface just for some practice. You'll probably dig a fair amount of trash, too. That's just goes with it. Hope you have a great time. Sue

Thanks for welcoming me - I read how you got started in this.  I will get my feet wet with the one I have invested the money in so far - I am not easily discouraged.  If I enjoy this as much as all of you seem to then I will explore other models and brands.  Thanks for your advice and I hope to be posting in your first find section soon.  By the way, great site.  It is very user friendly and designed well.
