3010/GC-1010 Metal Detector (Generic I think.  I got from Ebay)

I got my metal detector last year and I have only been searching in my yard & a nearby park.

Any suggestions on what to use to easily remove the dirt and put it back without leaving an unsightly mess/hole.  It seems like such a chore to dig in my yard and put it back.  There has got to be an easier way.

Teddi, welcome to the forums first of all.

There have been dozens, no - make that hundreds, of posts here on this exact subject so you have an enjoyable time ahead of you looking for them. The first thing you need to do is practice your ability to pinpoint a target. If you know exactly where an object is buried, it is far easier to remove it. I use a screwdriver that has had its tip rounded smooth. Just the edges rounded, not the entire blade. It is fairly large allowing me to probe deeply and find an object before I have to dig it. I then use a "v" shaped circular motion to make a funnel shaped hole to my target which I later push back in leaving virtually no evidence of a hole. Others use a variety of tools but I got into the habit of the screwdriver and it works for me. I really do leave hardly any evidence of digging.

Do a search on recovery tools on the forums and see what turns up. Often, along with describing the tools people use, they also describe their technique - just like I did here.

Thanks so much for this quick reply.  I definitely will check it out and try your technique too.  Right now what I am doing it too much work!

Work? What is that? I used to know what work was. Hmmm. Am I missing out on something?

Hi, Teddie14,

Nice to see you here. Thanks for telling me about this site. I'm interesting in Metal Detecting, but don't have one yet. Want to find a match for my height (smile).

They are almost all adjustable. Tall? They will most all accommodate a person up to 7 foot tall. Short? They will all work for someone under 4 foot tall. Remember, kids often follow parents around like shadows. Just remember one thing. If you wear shoes with metal eyelets, you can sometimes sense them and think you have a faint target.

Thanks for telling me about how adjustable they are. I'm tall. I also appreciate the tip about metal eyelets on shoes. Looks like this is going to be an adventure.

Well then you will have to mind yourself when getting up and down so the altitude does not give you a nosebleed or make you faint. I am not all that tall but still get faint when I find something really exciting.

Welcome to the forums. Have a great time here and a better one in the field!
