I'm going to Kitty Hawk NC and would like to go detecting.  I've never been there so instead of wasting time lookkng for places to shoot I thought I'd ask if anybody can guide me to some places to try.  I'm not proud.  Coins are nice and CIvil War artifacts (mini balls etc.) are fun to find
I'm not expecting anybody to give away hot spots but any assistance would be appreciated

Kitty Hawk is a National Park and off limits to detecting. You'll have to be sure that wherever you hunt that you are well clear of that.

How much time do you have to do research on the area?

I asked how much time you had because Civil War relics are plentiful if you know where to look. Battlefields are off limits but the nearby campgrounds normally are not so easy to find. You can use Google Earth to locate them based on logic. Nobody slept or cooked on the battle fields. They picked a spot where they could have a good field of view to watch for the enemy, had access to water and a supply of fuel like fallen trees. They would be near to but not extremely close to the place where the troops fought. Slighly higher ground was strategically sound but not so high that carrying water was too hard. Give it some thought and you'll find where they camped and uncover a plentiful source of relics.

Good luck and have fun. The South is full of battlefields and skirmish lines. A little research can go a long way. Or you could just walk along some of the beaches.

Wow! Great insight. Thank you.
I've been detecting for ovre 40 years and even went to England to detect but never got this sort of information.  Living in Tennessee you'r think I would hve done some CW hunting. Wrong. I live over three hours away from the fighting area. Too far for a day trip!
I just might get lucky and find an area you suggested I look for.
Thank you.
