I've got $200 to buy my first metal detector.  I don't really care what it looks like, but as a scientist I demand it decently discriminate targets by metal type.  Dial in, tune out maybe, I just want the capability to discriminate instead of having, for instance, a coin indicator icon that goes off on all sorts of objects.  Who's got some suggestions?  Product names of new models that fall under my criteria or I'll buy an old one off someone if they're around.  Thanks guys!

I'm thinking of land based relic hunting.  I'd do coins as well.  I've got access to two properties with houses well over 100 years old, those will probably be my first stops.  I'd really like to go all bronze/gold or all silver at times when I'm feeling lucky.

There are NO detectors that will do Brass and Gold only.  There Are no detectors that will do silver Only.  THERE are no detectors that will do what your asking for your $200.0 Price.  You asked and I gave you the Best answer I could.   Sorry Life is like that.

Your best answer was "I suggest visiting our beginners board and have a look around"?  Lol.  I liked what you just said over that.  Are there detectors in my price range that will give distinct tones for different types of metal rather than indicator lights for object type like "coins", I'd rather learn what tones are what than have a screen tell me and be wrong half the time.

Welcome to the forum from Oregon!   Welcome

There are no metal detectors that will detect just any specific metal according to an individual's criteria.  Metal detectors do just what the name says, they detect metal.  Some have circuits that in ideal conditions (there are no "ideal conditions" in the real world) have a tendency to detect gold, etc..

Your best bet is to take Homefire's advice and browse through the beginner forums about metal detecting and metal detectors.  Do your own research and you will learn a lot quicker and in-depth than having someone else tell you!

$200 will get you a good coil, so think what kind of metal detector you will get for $200
