Go Up Go Down

Hello!

I am newer than new, since I don't even have a metal detector yet. I am on the beginning edge of trying to determine what kind I want (and can afford) and to figure out whether there are any clubs or shops near me where I could get some instruction. So far nothing has turned up close.

I live in what seems like a great spot to inspect, 1900's farm with an old, "decommissioned" county road and an Underground Railroad trail wandering through my property. We have found several large surface items already, enamelled cookware, bottles, crocks, etc. Also one somewhat subsurface find - my husband hit a chunk of metal with the brush hog and when we went out in the pasture to check, found that it was the uppermost corner of nearly all of an old cast iron cookstove!

Anyway, I am excited about learning more about metal detecting and hope to connect with other like-minded people in my area.

Yep, you don't have to spend a fortune to find Piece's of History and Machines Like The Tesoro's that come with a life time Warranty are One of the Best Bangs for the Buck out there, Plus Whites and Garretts are Among the Best there Is, without having to sell body parts to Purchase them.

The New Nokta Fors Core is Great for prospecting and Treasure Hunting and They are the One to beat, The Fors Gold does not have the Salt Mode so it won't be good at the beach But the Fors Core is the Better Deal, And it is powerful and has it All.

Welcome from Arizona.

So what part of Ohio do you live in?  Knowing that could help folks help you find a club within a reasonable distance.

As far as detectors go, if you want a good, reliable, turn-on and go machine that doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles (in fact it doesn't really have any), but will produce good results and will stay in your active arsenal even after you add more advanced detectors that make it easier to identify what the target is quickly, it's hard to beat the Tesoro Compadre.
On the other hand, if the budget can afford it, take a long hard look at the Garrett AT Pro.   It produces consistently good results even in areas that appear to be "hunted out".   If I had to name a top producing detector in my local club right now, that would be the machine (and we have a wide variety of machines in use by people of all skill levels).

When it comes to knowledge, I suggest you spend a lot of time going through old posts here, especially in the Beginners board and in any board that particularly interests you.  You should also listen to Dan Hughes podcasts.  You'll find links to them on the "Metal Detecting in General" board.
