I'm also new here. Just bought my first detector (a chinese made TS150, military spec). Have found a lot of coins and a cool folding knife on my first few beach outings. Plan to try it out on a shipwreck site near where I live where some gold coins where washed up on the beach in 1682. Although in 1982 the wreck was excavated and 23,000 coins and a few hundered kilograms of silver were slavaged, I plan to try the beach for leftovers Smiley It's quite a remote location on the South African coast, and there are very few people out this way with metal detectors. I've researched over 2000 wrecks along the cape coast and some of them are on the beach now, or in the inter-tidal zone, perfect for metal detecing & coin shooting.

Thanks for the Welcome.  And I welcome you, also, JVZ7.  What shipwreck are you searching for, associated with whom?

It's the Joanna, an English East Indiaman that wrecked just east of Quoin Point...

Cool. Are you actively searching now or doing the research? A good friend of mine use to live in South Africa - her father was a doctor there. That's about all I know of South Africa.

Actually, I'm doing the research now. However, i bought the metal detector to start hunting. over the last 400 years about a dozen wrecks came to grief on the same point. lots of old corpses are buried on the beach. It was a wild and deserted place all those years ago and even if castaways survived the shipwreck, they mostly died of hunger etc.. So there's a lot of history that fascinates me. All the salvaging has been out at sea with almost no "beach hunting". I may be the first there with my detector, which makes it quite an adventure. Watch this space! Smiley

That's great!  Looks like you will have fun filled work ahead of you.  Nothing quite so wild here in the States, yet there is still a lot hidden. What good threads have you found on this site?

I really enjoyed looking at the latest finds. It's encouraging to see what kind of jewellry and stuff people pick up. What detector have you got?

Actually, I do not have a dectector.  I am researching a book and film on subjects surrounding Rennes Le Chateau and the treasure story there and elsewhere.
