Hello Aussie, I know a 100% for sure these are meteorites. They are iron siderites and a couple pallasites.  I have studied the ones I hunt for and can now tell the difference between shrapnel and the junk I find in the field where I hunt.  If you look closely at these photos you will see some olivine crystals in the pallasites and some fusion crust.  I will post a few more pics of a few pieces with olivine crystals, regmaglypts (thumb prints) and some flow lines for you to take a look at.

Beachcomber, thanks for the welcome.  It is definetly a great part of metal detecting to find meteorites if one looks in the right places for them. Europe, wow!  just look on the net for falls in Europe and possibly near where you reside.

Tyler,  thanks for the nice welcome!

Hi Ironman
They are great shots you have there .   So they are mostly iron I imagine ? do you detect for them or do you just hunt for them visionaly ? Are they buried under the surface or do you have to dig for them ?

Welcome, In 2006 I was visiting my brother-in-law in California. While walking along this beach I noticed a couple inches of this strange looking "rock" sticking out of the surf. Immediatly I thought it was a meteorite. I quickly dug it out, wrapped it in my jacket, and struggled( later I found out it weighed 75lbs ) up this steep embankment.

I took it back to his place and cleaned it up. It was the strangest rock we had ever seen. Had all kinds of depressions in it like someone had taken an ice cream scoop to it. Also it was DENSE. I was due to fly out the next morning, and couldnt take it with me. So I made my brother-in-law promise to take it to the science department at Stanford university where he was a student.

Everytime that my wife would be talking to him on the phone, I would say hey has he taken my meteorite to be examined yet? It was always no. He kept it as a centerpiece for his coffee table until just recently. Anyway the geologist at Stanford said it wasnt a meteorite. It was "one of the finest examples of volcanic basalt they had ever seen". They said it would have been purged from an underwater volcanic vent and supercooled by the ocean.

They wanted to keep it but he told them no it wasnt his. I will try and get him to send me some pics to post. Tate

Aussie, they are solid iron.  I detect for them with my White's GMT.  I have only seen one on top of the ground. They range in depth from 1/2 inch deep and up to a foot deep.

Tate,  thanks for the welcome!  An interesting story.  Post the pics when you get a chance.

cool finds!  I was down in Albuquerque last year and talked to a guy who claims to see a lot of  broken pieces of native american pottery scattered around frequently while out quail hunting not to far from the city. I didn't think anything of it at the time but now am wondering if he knew of some rare relics and just didn't know it or if those pieces of pottery are found frequently out there and considered nothing to get excited over. Your thoughts?

p.s. I'm new to the site also. Looks like fun!

Farmdigger,

Hey welcome to you as well!  The pottery shards here in N.M. are quite common in several areas near Albuquerque and around the state.  I really don't think they have a value other then for ones personal collections.  That is unless you find a whole pot, then some are very rare depending on which area and tribe they originated from.

I was just talking to my brother the other day about the Indian pottery from northern N.M.  When we were kids we spent a lot of time with family in northern N.M. not far from Taos.  Behind my Aunts house back in the mountains are several caves that the Indians used frequently.  He says while hiking with my cousin they located a smaller cave which they peered into.  Inside were about two dozen Indian pots of all sizes and all intact.  He said they could not get to them because of the huge number of rattle snakes in that cave and never bothered to go back.  Well needles to say, we are planning a trip to locate these caves but I might add in the winter when the snakes are out of commission!  would sure be an interesting adventure to get a hold of a couple of them.  Another thing he mentioned was when he was in the service and use to fly in the helicopters, they were on a mission near the Manzano mountains when the pilot landed.  They then walked a short distance to a large cave with tons of indian pots and artifacts.  None of the crew ever bothered the sites they were shown and were sworn to secrecy!  Interesting.

Sounds like you need a mongoose, for a hunting buddy, to kill those venomous snakes.
