Go Up Go Down

Greetings from the noob. Pictured below are the result of my first day of detecting. (Well, to be fair, about an hour.)

The location was on my family's property in Hunt county, Texas. At some time there was a house at the spot I was detecting, which I'm guessing would have been in the late 1800s. There are two Bois D'Arc piers left in the ground, and an old well that's collapsed and almost totally filled in. I can tell about where the house stood from the clearing of a dozen or so old trees, but can't quite figure out how the house would have been oriented, or exactly where it would have been in the clearing. I think I must have started in an old junk pit.

There was so much junk in the area that it was quite frustrating, especially being a first-timer. Most things the delta thought were dimes, quarters or .50 cent pieces a few inches deep were usually rusted nails a bit nearer the surface. A small door hinge, the air valve off a tractor tire (which I'm guessing belonged to the one I blew out very near the same area a couple of years ago), a couple of pieces of cast iron, loads of china shards, an interesting rock or two, and some kind of mangled disk. It's got a very dark patina, but from the bright copper color at the torn edges, I would guess it was some kind of copper plate. Could have been maybe the bottom plate of a candle holder or lamp or some such.

The darned clay ground isn't great to dig in, either. Especially as dry as it's been for the last couple of years. I think before I try again, I'm going to have to till up the ground a couple of inches deep. If I'm mostly going to be digging rusty old nails, at least it would be nice to make the digging a bit easier.

-Matt

Thanks for the welcome folks. This property was originally part of a Spanish Land grant back in the 1700s, I believe. Other than this particular site, I believe there is only one other spot that has been built on, and that was a very small horse ranch that folded. A couple of barns remain but the house apparently burned down in the early 1950s.

Like just about anywhere else I suppose, there's no telling what might be out there.

Howdy, Matt.   Welcome from a Texan living in Arizona.   A lot of us know what you mean about that clay being hard digging, especially when it gets real dry.    There are times when you want to trade your digger in fro a jackhammer.   Sounds like a really interesting piece of ground you have.
