Military Radio expert home made

Hello all I am here to possibly gain some advice or knowledge on ressurrecting a fully discriminating detector made in the late 60s I believe by a retired Military radio frequency expert. I possess 1 of only 3 units made by this gentleman. Unfortunately the only piece Im currently missing is 1 of the MOST VALUABLE. Unlike other detectors on the market , this unit uses a large diameter 3 ft coil to pinpoint and null out all other metals no matter the number of trash targets . A little history on it. Back in the 70's to early 80s in Wickenburg, AZ they held Gold Rush Days as a public event for hobbyists etc using metal detectors to take a stab at their Horse Trough filled with trash items and 6 or more chunks of gold. You Keep What You Find !! So with that being said the maker of this unit Brian Falkner ( deceased) took this detector with it's large coil and went down the horse trough nulling out Everything and in 1 sweep CLEARED it of ALL THE GOLD !
Now this brings me to today 2017 .. Tragically my father who took ownership of it long ago, had a not so bright friend help clean up his storage shed and the Large coil ended up in a trash dumpster. So the quest to try and make a new large coil is on me . I have a much smaller coil luckily and it has markings relating to frequencies , induction and other stuff I've yet to pinpoint. Rather than destroy the small coil to figure it out I took it to my friend whom is a Chiropractic Dr and we shot an Xray .. Wink  .. What I am hoping is to recreate the larger coil using the smaller 1 as a guideline for the build. It has a 6 wire connector going to the small coil but appears that they tie together and has 3  going to coils in a wooden encasement. This is where I go total newb and do not understand how the coil connections are completed. I see that maybe there are 2 seperate coils inter-twined. 2 wires go to start and end of 1 coil and the other somehow connects in or forms its own coil. Ive looked at many pictures via google on home made and the abundant other types of coils for different detectors. If anyone sees how this was built or can give their perspective .. I am all Ears !!! Grin I will put more pics of the coil and detector up at later time it's 2 am and I just got done searching the web for clues. Thanks in advance and looking forward to checking out this great site in more depth in the coming days.

                                                                     ~ FalknersHunter ~

Welcome from Connecticut where we await the first blizzard of the year, hopefully the only one.

Someone may come along and have just the coil you need. As to technical help, you may find that difficult since they seem to be produced in such a small quantitiy to make finding schematics a lost cause.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Welcome to the Forum from New Mexico.  Photo's speak a 1000 words.   Please share a photo of your detector when possible.  We have many Vintage Metal Detector  Users and Collectors most knowledgeable  in machines dating back that far.

In your photo I see what appears to be Metallic Window Screen in the X-Ray.  Garret was one Company known to employ this type of material as a Faraday Shielding.

 Thank You for Joining.

Will do if I can . My Samsung phones camera is pretty good at 16 megapixels and only degrades quality to 2 megapixels.. Noticed the limit on files is 500 kbs  ..

True GoldDigger1950 , I had an  Idea  pop into my head. Was doing background check on a guy I was trying to do an online purchase from... So while the account is active I searched for Mr Falkner himself and found his children. Amazingly today as well my semi incoherent Father snapped into reality and was able to answer my questions regarding who had the other 2 detectors last time he talked to Falkner.. ( passed away in 06)  Apparently 1 of his sons took possession of it and could still have it. So I gotta track the sons of this guy down (3 of them )  and send them a letter and/or phone call. This might be my only real option . It has a 6 wire plug. only 3 wires are used . So the other 3 might go to the bigger coil specifically. All of these circuits and coils were built to work how he wanted them to and its simply not just a bundle of coiled enameled wire that i can toss at it and get results. I Appreciate everyone's input and will try posting some pics so you can see this beast.  Wink

i may be wrong at my previous post.
the spikes i thought was the frame for the coil, looks like that are part of the coil's wiring
you can see that if you magnify the part where the cable connect to the coil.
never seen this arrangement before.  Shocked

Exactly nickel_n  .. I have looked at literally near 100 different coil wiring diagrams ..nothing like it .  If you took a slinky ( coiled up spring toy from past )  and slid that around the flat plane of wires BOOM you got the design. Appears to be 20 turns on 1 plane then meticulously spaced wire spiraling around the 20 . Gotta Love that Xray If you could see it on my end in 16 megapixel fashion its alot clearer . Still hard to decipher where the connections go on 1 or 2 of the 3 wires.
