Hi All

Ive been reading & researching metal detectors for a few months & although i have not metal detected before i feel ready to make my first purchase. I would value any advise on what machine to purchase? I will be looking mainly for relics on common, soil, pasture and farm land. From what reading i have done i am inclined to buy a analogue type i prefer actually turning controls and feeling/ hearing compared to push button on screen visuals. So it might have to be a fairly old machine.I have a budget of about £200 for a used machine.

Thanks

A good choice would be a good, used Tesoro Vaquero. Excellent machine for relics at a good price.

I agree with the Tesoro recommendation.

I recommend that you choose based on the criteria of your fitness level, strength and abilities though. Almost every detector can find relics and coins so your physical needs should be a prime consideration. All of the Tesoro low end models in your price range are very light and easy to swing all day long for most people.

Thanks for your advice I will certainly check the Tesoro vaquero as I would like as good a depth as I can afford. Incidentally What does anyone think of the early Fisher models like 1236x2 1266x or CZ-7a?
As for my fitness Golddigger I would say I am in a good overall fitness
Thanks

When I was a youngster, seriously bitten by the treasure hunting bug, my Garrett Groundhog was a snap to swing all day. It was also my best ever producer of treasure over the years. When I asked about your fitness, it was only to remind you that the lighter the machine the better. Some of those old work horse machines are still the best there is for finding treasure but they are heavy and can tire you out.

Thanks gold digger, your right it would of been an easy observation to miss, i will certainly take the weight into consideration, also is it just me but i have been researching for a couple of months but i still keep swaying from machine to machine. Agreeing on one then thinking about a different one, i can't seem to just pick one machine and stick with it. It's so confusing! LOL!

Thanks Alfieboy,
I am looking forward to buying a machine & get detecting. What machine would you advise for relic/gold detecting around £400 or $500  i'm still struggling on which machine to purchase?

If you will be looking for natural gold (nuggets) you can’t pass the ML line of detectors. A second hand SD series will cost you $800-$900 AU.
If you are looking for gold alloy (rings) on the beach or parks then any of the Hi end of Whites Garrets or Tesoro's will do.
You can find them at your price range on eBay in the states or have a look at kellyco's web site,
BUT what ever you buy spent time and learn your detector.
All of them will let you know that they detect something .you have to be able to understand what they say to you
