Maunsell WW2 Sea Forts

Out of the mist appears like strange alien robots from war of the worlds.
No this is not relics from an alien invasion but a real conflict of WW2 when England was threatend by the Nazis. England in its hour of need resorted to many unique projects. One such project was the Maunsell anti air craft batteries guarding the Thames estuary.
I cannot imagine a more cold windswept and exposed gun platforms facing aircraft attack. Today they stand as a rusting tribute to a Stoic era of English history.

these have a story within the pirate radio stations of the 60`s , i had vaguely thought it was to do with radio caroline, but it was to do with city radio in oct 1965 when they set up a transmitter on one of the forts in hardlucks post. called shivering sands fort.

Definitely pretty neat, and not someplace I'd have wanted to be stationed, but also not forerunners of present day oil platforms. If anything, oil platforms were the inspiration for the Manusell sea forts. The first oil platform for a submerged well was built in 1891 in Grand Lakes Saint Marys in Ohio. In 1937, Pure Oil and Superior Oil put a fixed platform 1 mile off of the Louisiana coast.

That's interesting BA. Would have thought the under sea drilling would have come later. I see they have a reproduction well at Titusville, PA on the old Edwin Drake site..
