What I want to know is where do these rocks come from ...can't be far and you'll probably find some if you dig in the yard in fact I'm sure that you will there must be lots in that area that's why they used them to build with.I would love to know what else is in those walls. SO WHEN DO WE START  Grin

xavier I would love to take you to Johnson's Rock Shop in Indian Springs Texas. Its a family owned shop started by Mr Johnson and his wife in Huh??  They have pet wood from all over east Texas that they have self collected  from 1 oz to 1000's of pound pieces. All the saws, tumblers and other equipment was  built by Mr. Johnson. Its a place to see.

Hi Seldom

When I was a kid (still am ) we used to go to a man that did his own stone polishing he had stones from all over the world a very big collection he died a few years back now had I known what I don't know today I would have questioned him to tears. I did see his tumbler very simple process from what I can understand but what do you put in there? (apart from the stone's )  come to think of it perhaps he and Mr Johnson  knew one another I know that he did a lot of traveling.

In a tumbler you use different grits of grinding powder I start with a 100 grit for say a week then a 400 grit a week then a very fine grit 1000/1200 for a few days to a week. Then a polishing powder for Huh?? I use tin oxide to polish but there are better ones available. I use it because I got a deal on 50 pd some years ago.

Stay away from the 39 dollar ones sold in the craft stores Like the 39 dollar metal detector you want be happy and want to up grade fast.
Harbor Fright has a 2 drum tumbler for around 40 bucks which is a good deal. As for grit I got a place that I get mine by the pound will find the link for you.
Remember lapidary work is as addictive as treasure hunting but they do go hand in hand.

thank you very much for the information.  when i get my weekends with my daughter, i make her go outside and rockhound or we'll go off together and go looking for fossils and do some metal detecting, and she is getting into it quite heavily, and i believe that tumbling would be perfect to keep her interest and collection going. thank you for the advice

Thats a cool old building BA, perfect for a rock shop.

Tumbling is a great way to get started in lapidary for a youngster Smiley

Personally I'm partial towards vibrating tumblers. Much faster to process a batch with them, and easier to check. With a drum you have to stop and open it up to look and with the other kind you just pop the top and see how the rocks are moving in the slurry.

Since I am attention deficit if something takes to long I forget it and with tumblers that means concrete. Grin Probably more expensive than drum model though.

Vibrating tumblers are great and do work faster but much more expensive.
