Nice links Seldom, I need a brass tumbler myself and was thinking of buying one. Maybe I will just make one now Smiley

Both are volcanic in nature as I understand it. Basically a geode forms crystals in a hollow ball of mud created by a gas pocket, and thundereggs are filled with liquified minerals which solidify and form an agate core. Exactly how seems open to some debate. Thats just my basic understanding of them.

From what I remember/recall I'm pretty Idaho is right about this.  (and supporting it is the fact that you frequently find Geodes that are ALMOST thundereggs---except for a really small void where the crystals managed to grow......almost like geodes are the results of something changing during the normal formation of thundereggs)

thank you all for the information on the thunder eggs.  i remember being a kid out in the west desert here in Utah digging up geodes.  i haven't done it since, but am trying to schedule a small weekend trip out to there to get my little girl involved in the thrill of the hunt a bit more.  as always thanks again

Seldom I got the plan now I can see how it works but the way that they do it is no good placing a weight on the spindle will wear out the rotor bush I will draw it in the morning and send it to you if you think that it,s OK then I'll post it OK

I use a lortone 3A tumbler.

You can get them cheaper at other sites than Lortone. It works well and doesn't leak! Remember you need to fill the tumbler about 3/4 full to get a good tumble, so don't get one too big or you will have to use a lot of stones for one batch. Stones of like hardness should be tumbled together also so they wear down ar the same rate.

There is problem with this site I send posts and they don't always arrive mind you i"m still amazed at the fact that it arrives at all so let's try this again Hi Seldom I had a look at the design of the vibration tumbler and it's basically the same as what I once build for the manufacture of roof tiles however I don't like the off center weight on the rotor the motor will vibrate  more than the stones so I'm going to use a V-belt to dive the vibrator (no funny comments from you BA  Grin) I will send you a copy of my design.

Yeah I see big problem with motors in there design. Looking forward to your improvements.
