Hello All

St Catherine's Island (Welsh: Ynys Catrin) is a small tidal island linked to Tenby in Pembrokeshire, Wales, by a beach at low tide. The island is home to a Palmerston fort, constructed to protect Pembroke Dock and completed in 1870. In 1907, the island was sold privately for 500 pounds. St. Catherine's Fort has four main bedrooms, 16 turret rooms and an old banquet hall with a life size statue of Queen Victoria and an old, half-broken suit of armour. In the basement there is an old armoury which used to hold 444 barrels of gunpowder. At one time the fort was used as a zoo.

It is known colloquially as St Catherine's Rock and the area directly in front of it is known as the Catterns.

Today it lies abandoned and boarded up.

Another example of letting some unfashionable history go to waste.

Hardluck  Wink

Hello Seldom

It was made into a private house around 1900. After the 1930's it became a zoo.  If cleaned up re plumbed and rewired would make an unusual home. I am surprised too that some thing has not been done with it.

But it may be because if its heritage listing. Some times heritage listings are so restrictive that it makes retaining a historic property very expensive. However it would be expensive and tricky to comply with modern standards required of all commercial properties, such as disability access etc... Without impeding on the heritage order.

If I have the money I'd like covert it into an expensive Bed and breakfast or a private house.

Parking the car might be tricky.!  Grin

Hardluck

That would make a very unique home with no worries of neighbors building in front of your ocean view! Neat place.
