i recently found a stone wall that is about six ft tall, 4 ft wide and runs down the side of a hill to a small stream then it comes to a 90 degree turn and is mostly gone at this point  you can follow it for a little ways but the it disappears any thought what it is there for

My only thought is if it's 4 ft wide it could be something Military?
An old stockade perhaps?

Hello everyone
I live on the Mississippi River- the Corps build dikes to slow the river down to retard erosion. Could they have built this for the same purpose. My next suggestion would be to check Sanborn maps.

hi mod the wall runs vertically down the side of a steep hill it starts from nothing and gets higher as it decends at the bottom it is around 6ft tall.   its about 4ft across.   there is no other sections of wall still standing but there appears to be a 90 degree turn at the bottom but no more can be seen

thanks for the post findoldstuff  the only water in the area is a small trickle of a stream that runs below the wall.  the wall runs vertically and the stream runs horizotally so i dont think its for water retention   thanks for the idea though
