Go Up Go Down

Hey guys I was wondering if anyone had any leads in the Eastern Oregon area that I should look into.  I know the area I use to live in (John Day which is only a couple hours from here) was a gold town back in the day.  I also know there have been quite a few mines around this area including a legend about an old lost Nez Perce mine.

One of my favorite eastern Oregon treasures is the lost Blue Bucket Mine. The Stephan Meeks party took a shortcut in 1854 and along the way found some sizeable nuggets. It's a great story.

you've got a whole passel of ghost towns in eastern Oregon.   In addition,
1) there's an outcropping lost by railroad workers in the 1880s somewhere near Milton that assayed for $100,000/ton in copper, silver, and gold  The ledge was apparently rediscovered by a sheepherder in 1900  although all he did was pick up the pretty rocks and it wasn't until after his death that they were assayed.
2) you've got outlaw loot buried around Stage Gulch between Pendleton and Stanfield   (In fact Pendleton seems to be a real good place to look for hidden treasures)
3)you've got a lost cinnabar mine in Grant County as well as several missing caches
4) massacred chinese miners with a missing cache of nuggets in Wallowa County
5) also in Wallowa County, a miner found a 60 carat black opal gemstone while working some old gold diggings.   could there be more?
6) the lost Two Swede's Gold Mine near Unity in Baker County
7) an old hobo jungle south of Baker on the Union Pacific
Cool tje Lost Sheepherder Mine and Lost Malheur Diggings in Malheur County.

That's just skimming the surface.....Go check out the library and read the OLD history books of the area and the old newspaper accounts to develop these and other leads.

Holy smoke BA that is quite a good list to start with  Shocked

I will try and look for the older history books and newspapers for out here any other sources I should look for?  It just so happens I have the summer off of both work and school so some research maybe in order.

What exactly would be a hobo jungle?  What kinds of things would I look for there?

A hobo jungle --- a hobo jungle is a place where those who rode the rails for free camped.....the jungles could be permament or temporary.

If you remember the old Roger Miller song, King of the Road, it was a glorified look at hoboes and their lifestyle.   Here are some links that should help :

And before you dismiss hobo jungles since most hobos were chronically short on money, keep in mind that many relatively well off people went "hobo-ing" for the sheer fun of it.   Plus you've got a criminal class that was committing crimes and hiding the loot.  And on top of that, there is actually a market for a lot of hobo made items.

one key to finding the Hobo Jungle is think in terms of how big Baker would have been in the 20's, 30's, and 40's.   Look for a small creek near an old sawmill (which may or may not still be there)

I've got a good lead for you.  I was there 3 weeks ago.  There's a story about a miner nicknamed "set um up"  He came to Jacksonville and told about his cabin where the stream was full of gold.  He was a high roller buying drinks for everyone.  Some believe his cabin was somewhere between Prospect and Crater Lake or Diamond lake.  I found a stream that doesn't have a name.  Also one of the campgrounds in the area bears the name of one of the party of searchers looking for "set um up"  We visit the area yearly to check on the folks. Interested?
