Go Up Go Down

Since I'm new here and need to post some comments, here goes: About a year ago Cousin Dave (Desert Dave) and I were heading west out of the Atlantic City mining district of Wyoming and stopped for a couple of days in Sumpter, Oregon, a tiny historical mining town west of Baker City.  I had learned about the place from a guy local to me in SOCAL who had grown up in Granite, a tinier mining community north of Sumpter a few miles.  What we discovered were mile after mile of tailings alongside nearly every flow of water within the area.  Sumpter was home to a couple of floating dredges, one of which is on historical display near the center of Sumpter.  According to local literature, the dredges spit out nearly fifty percent of the placer gold taken in, implying that there should be considerable placer still to be found within the high mounded tailings.  The caveat here is that they obviously must be on public land and not on someone else's active claim. While we did some cursory metal detecting in one area along Cracker Creek, we didn't have the time or resources to do any serious work which would have required displacing tons of rock and gravel.  Of possible interest is a comment made to me by an elderly prospector regarding the depth of the bedrock.  Supposedly the dredges didn't get anywhere near BR due its depth of nearly twenty feet on various streams and rivers.  If true, apparently the huge dredges couldn't reach down far enough because of the way they were floated on their own ponds adjacent to the water runs.

I hope this helps and if anyone has additional information, or can correct any errors I may have made, I'd be interest to hear it.  After some more research into claims, etc. we're headed back in spring 2011.

Welcome from Australia! I split your post off on its own and gave it a new topic to get some better exposure for your magnificent lead on potential tailing finds. Thanks for telling us about it.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Welcome from an Oregonian. I too, am new here, and wanting to learn. So, I'm just kind of lying low, and reading. Best regards.

Don't get me wrong here because the $ was worth a whole lot more back then , then now.

At $16.00 or $35.00 a Oz, you bet they let a lot of the small stuff float of the edge.

That Float Gold is worth a bundle now.

 Great

Another Oregonian ( N. Coast) here piping a welcome aboard (a note here, I'm not Navy but my pappy was, I'm Air Force.)  I know about the tailings piles over there and also in Idaho, my pap worked on a dredge in ID after WWII but didn't like civi. life so went back in the Navy.

I haven't had real chance to go over to the N. East of the state that is until now.  Me mum moved over to John Day a few months back and now I have a reason to stomp some new ground.

BTB I lived in San Diego from the early "50's" until I enlisted in "64".

Take care & have a good winter,
Dennis

One of the dredges is still is still there in a state park and open for tours most of the time. Not sure how much of the area is open for mining activities but the entire valley was run through the dredges, there is still plenty of gold but it would involve moving tons of material through a sluice. I would concentrate on the areas inaccessible to the dredges and the higher lodes.

One thing to keep in mind now is that a lot of that land full of dredgings is private land or government land (Wait!  Isn't that supposed to be OUR land?)  Be sure you have the right permission to be there if you want to work it.              Wise         Detecting
