I am looking for information on what beaches allow metal detecting. Also I have never found any jewelry yet, can someone please tell me the best places in Oregon to find old coins and Jewelry?

                        Thanks,
                         Kelly

The answer to that question is going to be the same the world over. Go where people go and you will find what you are looking for. Jewelry, coins and other valuables are dropped when large gatherings of people get together for recreation and fun. Look in old newspapers that tell of fairs, races, exhibitions and other gatherings of people. Wherever they met, there will be things dropped.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Del Rey Beach near Astoria might be good, used to you could drive onto that beach so no telling what you might find. I also used to detect at Rockaway and further south at Gold Beach years ago.

Like GD says where people are is where you will find the most stuff.

Thanks, still.bald.   That's very useful information for any of us who either live in Oregon or who are planning a trip there soon.

When looking into detecting around Florence, I spoke with Lori Coffindaffer who was tremendously helpful.  She emailed me the form to fill out and allowed me to print it, sign it, scan it, and send it back to her.  She then emailed me back the permit to be printed out.  I had my permit in about two days!  Smiley

Anyway, I tip my hat to Lori.

Smiley My claim to fame on that hunt was a pair of Gerber baby nail clippers.  I probably won't be taking a pic of that.

Anyway, when I was a kid, I hiked up to the top of the major dune.  Right at the crest, the wind had uncovered an indian head nickel.  The exposed side of the nickel was totally destroyed and there was no indication that it was a coin.  The lower side was as bright and shiny and new looking as the day it was lost.  Kind of an interesting find...
