No problemo, that's the whole idea of joining a forum make friends and get answers to the most befuddling of questions and sometimes even the easy ones that seem to escape the grey cells.

Thought I should chime in here as well, from Cottage Grove just south of Eugene. I work as a phone tech (well mostly now internet). I do photography part time, love to camp, hike and do stuff in the outdoors. I love Clive Cussler's novels and have always had a hankering for treasure hunting, now that I finally got a metal detector I'm thoroughly hooked. Arfie, its been a few years since we've gone but I love to hunt up in the Blue's out of Imnaha. Hopefully in a few years I will get back up that way. There was a lot of gold that came out of your neck of the woods back in the day, if I was you I would be on the edges of the powder river valley looking for nuggets the dredge missed.

Hi Caleb!  Good to hear from another Oregonian!  You are right about all the gold in this area.  Still several big mines operating and a lot of little claims producing gold too.  Back in the '70's and 80's I roamed all through the gold country here.  I wasn't so much looking for gold, but ghost towning and relic hunting in those days.  I went through the whole cycle of treasure hunting activities, now I'm pretty much back to coin shooting again.

Hunting is good in these mountains usually.  With the heat this year and the dryness I don't know how well things are going to be this season.

I used to have a couple of cousins live in the Cottage Grove area.  None there now.  As I recall, you're not too far from the Bohemia mining district where you are.  Is that right?  Spent any time there?  Welcome again, and have a great time here.   Good hunting and may you find many great treasures!           Detecting

Yep I go up in the Bohemias fairly often, Lots of placer claims down low, all the lode stuff is pretty high up and blocked by snow most of the year. I got an invite from the owner of the Musick claim to come up and try out my luck, maybe have some fun blasting in the tunnels. Hopefully I will have time to get up there before the snows come. Ive been looking over some areas of historic placer deposits to try out my detector on, but most of the native gold in our area is in ore and not readily accessible. The larger stuff is mostly glacier deposits that have been eroded into the streams. There is still some big gold coming out of the high county every summer though.

Add another Oregonian to the group,  I am originally from Roseburg, living now in Newport.  Air Force vet, DoD civilian employee, now NOAA employee. Glad to be back in home state again... many many many years away. Been in metal detecting for awhile, more hit and miss for years.  Did a lot of coin shooting in Oklahoma before moving to Seattle then back down here.  Anyways hello fellow Oregonians.

Go Up Go Down

Was going to hit Loon Lake here in the next week, with all the hot rainless weather we been getting here on the coast I figured that beach ought to be loaded with all kinds of goodies, so called up Roseburg BLM office and talk to the gal there, she kind of put a squelch on that idea, but she told me to talk to Coos Bay office.  I got a kick out of that gal, she was telling me she had no clue, to actually call the Loon lake office LOL.  So I'll have to investigate that one further, but doesn't look like I will be able to detect on the beach there.  Oh well, so now looking into another popular swimming lake.  Triangle Lake has a nice little beach area for swimming.  I don't see that one owned by anyone but the local inhabitants there.  So will have to research it as well.
