Anyone know some good easy to start at locations in Oregon? Around central coast or valley areas? I understand that many of the state parks require sign ups and over a certain dollar value must be turned into the state but have no idea where to begin? Wise

Hello I'm Doug from Albany Ore its nice to see on the forum. I do Hunt alot of the State Parks hear in Ore, an you do need a permit for some, an there are some you do not, The web page Posted by: seldom is a good start, The parks that require a permit are the ones you have to turn your finds into for 30 days ( Rings and Jewelry) all the coins you don't need to, after 30 days if no one has claim them, they are yours to keep. The parks that don't require a permit you don't need to turn them in, they are yours to Keep. I hope this helps you out some. HH  Detecting

I've talked to some folks who like to go up to Green Peter Lake, and in that area for some panning and sluicing. Perhaps nuggets can be found. Just a thought. Good success!

Green Peter Lake is a very pretty place.  Keep your eyes open for petrified wood and blue agate as well as gold if you go there.

Hi,

I'm new to thunting also but might offer some help.  Browse to

http://www.geocommunicator.gov/blmMap/Map.jsp?MAP=MC
and doubleclick into Oregon.  The page will load with a map of active mining claims.  At the bottom of the page you will have options for Satelite view, Topo view, etc.  The map is a bit hard to learn to use, but eventually, you can search for inactive claims and get details on those claims.  Also a checkbox to see if the land is USFS, BLM, or private land.  Very useful.

still.bald, that was a great tip you provided.  It's a site a lot of our members use and that anyone interested in hunting for anything outside the city in the US (but especially anyone planning on "prospecting") should have "bookmarked" on their browser.    Now for a free tip you may not know....you can use it even in urban areas.  I've identified several old claims in the Phoenix area that are now buried beneath housing developments and malls.  Now it's not likely anyone is going to let you dig up their yard looking for gold nuggets, but on the other hand the drainage ditches and the right-of-ways, and especially the "soil" accumulations that collect at speed bumps and other natural "sluice" areas after a heavy rain washes down from the hills in the area are pretty much fair game as long as you don't trespass on private or restricted property...scoop up some promising dirt into a 5 gallon bucket and take it home to pan out at your leisure.

Thanks, BitburgAggie_7377.  Good idea.
That would be a good idea around Southern Oregon.

I've also spent some time looking at the original DLO surveys looking for ghost towns.  Haven't been to many, but what I've seen has been interesting.  The town of Dollar up the Calapooia was of interest.  Although bulldozed, I found one spot covered with blackberries which still had a bit of fence circling the front yard of a house with non-native flowers still coming up.
Quartzville was a total disappointment as a logging operation had totally destroyed the townsite.  Also, the area is over-camped and garbage is found everywhere.  Supposedly, there is also a town called Anidem up Packers creek in that area, but I haven't had a chance to look for it.

By the way, I recently was dipping a pan in Cow Creek, west of Riddle, Oregon.  After coming home, I did some research on the creek and came up with a townsite which I can't find any information.  If you have any ideas on finding information concerning this town, it would be highly appreciated.
The site is here:

And this is the link showing townsite information.

Looks like a good spot to me.  You've got enough information with there to be able to access the county records to see who owns/controls the land.  From there it's just a matter of getting in touch with the owners and getting permission to hunt it.

Seems the owner is Roseburg Forest Products.
Anyone have any idea who to contact within that corporation or whether they care if prospecting is done on their property?
