Hello and Welcome to Thunting.com !! For 3 feet or more depth depth you will need a decent "pulse induction" metal detector circuit such as the Sniffer XR71 or the DBP2010 and a 45 cm[18 inch] P.I. search coil .....A decent VLF metal detector project from this forum will only work to maybe a 12 inch maximum depth on big coins . Please Check our "Tech Talk" area for the do-it-yourself projects !! And let us know which one you are interested in . Then we can e-mail a schematic to you Tommorrow . Thank-You for joining us.

Best Regards...................Eugene52

This will go to 3 feet and more with the right coil (I presume you are looking for a largeish object or "cache" of coins - NO detector is going to go to 3 feet on a single coin)

Hello Everyone !! Paul is correct , the Chemelec website has a bunch of "good" assorted electronic projects and a few very good metal detector projects , worth checking out .

Yes Gary's PI Detector will hit a drink can at 16 inches.  I have built 1 and am working on another.

PI  detectors are sensitive alright but you would want to be detecting something worthwile if you were considering digging 3 ft plus because PI detectors find everything including all the trash .
I dont want to be digging more than 12 inches looking for coins unless its in soft ground or sand .  Wise
