As for getting better depth .. you need a bigger diameter coil, but you will loose sensitivity on smaller objects because of this.

using a ferrite core is possible with a small coil .. but the only thing you have to take into consideration is that the coil needs to be matched to the circuit. the Surf PI circuit calls for coil inductance of around 240uH to 300uH with a coil resistance of approx 1 ohm to 1.6 ohms (resistors in series may be needed to achieve the desired resistance) else you could damage the parts in the circuit.

GL with your SurfPI build if you decide to proceed.

Please note that the Geotech1 Links are all 404 error pages unless you are logged in to that forum. So, log in first, then go there.

Actually, you must be logged in to HostGator.

Maybe someone only wants to do one or two modifications and see how each affects the circuit, more a learning tool. Why have everything done for you, what will you learn then? appart from its quicker to have a ready made circuit.. then if that's the case you might as well go and buy a ready made machine.

I feel the PI is a good entry level PI machine as it is basic enough that you can break down the schematic into a flow chart/process chart and see how each section works, if you are confident enough you could then go on and calculate the timings of the components based on the resistances, capacitance and conductance all built into the circuit.. I can decipher it and I only did electronics at A-level (college level) 22 years ago and not much since. but i suppose I was fairly bright as I managed to build a fairly complex car alarm with siren, door sensors, entry and exit timing etc. when I was 18. Tongue

I suppose your right... but not everyone can see a circular object , apply some logic and come up with the wheel  Bang Head (you have seen some of the posts on this site  Grin Grin ... lol) they need to get some hands on experience first. Just because we have the wheel and know what it is for, some long lost tribe might not have a clue. Round About
Then there is future development, we would not have the tyre now (still in constant development), if someone had not seen a problem with the wheel!
So I'm not going to argue. This is just a place to get all the simple,  yet useful information relating to the SurfPI together for all the people who struggle with this project.
Basics first.

You keep at it mate, no such thing as useless information as long as it's correct information. I for one have a habit of breaking down schematics because by doing it I find new ways of going about doing things and sometimes how not to do them.

(you have seen some of the posts on this site  Grin Grin ... lol) they need to get some hands on experience first.

I understand how they feel about buying a metal detector. A decent one is going to cost about the same as a trip the grocery store at the low end and around the price of a decent used car at the upper end. That's a lot of cash to lay out for a speculative hobby.

What they don't realize is that if you go out 3 days a week and gather 200 coins with an average value of 5c, that means you take in $10 a week just in coins. Add in the occasional piece of jewelry or valuable relic and you could be looking at $50 a week or more. Do that for 6 months and you have $1200 in just about face value alone. In three years time you would have paid for that top of the line detector.

But when you are on the outside looking in, it can be very scary.

For those of you who thought 200 coins a week was a lot, that's what I do in a single session these days. But then, the computer between the headphones is trained to know where to look. Just like a lot of the guys here who go out regularly.
