on my PCB TR2 is TIP31C., It kinda looks a little like a seven but its a One. See the pic .
I see the one coil wire going the collector of TR2, and the other coil wire going to ground . Got it.

Ok then that's OK now I take it that you have one wire to the one side of the coil the other to the other side of the coil but check that the ground wire is not making any contact (a short) I see that your soldering will need more practice (never mind) now send me a pic of the battery connection and the coil PCB side too also tell me all that you did to the detector since you got it Ho yes I want to see the control side of it too (knobs to PCB)in fact all that you did some soldering to . And check that the centre pin from the pot (gain) is connected to R15 the two out side ones will be connected to R16 and R17 that could very well be the problem in fact I sure that it?s where you had a problem

Ok here are the pics , and I'll check VR1  middle pin goes to R15  and other two pins to R16, R17.
The only thing I did was when I transplanted it into the new case. I had to resolder the Power wires at power connector, removed RCA jack and added Coaxial connection in place. Also I added ON/OFF switch to negative side power wire.  Thats it
Thanks for your help Xavier

Aliman why did you place an on/off SW on neg? it should be on Pos. I can not see the connection of the two 9V batteries but you say that they are in series so you should have it wired like this + to PCB -to+ and - to PCB (I hope that this is clear) I see on the pic that there are (on the control knob) Grey Black Grey wires is the black wire going to R15 or R36? I need to know in order to distinguish the two control pots. The pot should be 220K (VR1) going on R15 the other is 10K (VR2) going on R36 (centre pin on Pot) By the way do you have a volume control( dose it work?)

Hi,

Sorry for interrupting, maybe i'm wrong, but as i know the BF245 is fully open when there is 0V on it's gate. So since the audio generator 555 is getting unregulated supply, and the BF245 is open, he could have audio -equivalent to full scale signal- while having the regulators messed up.
Correct me if i'm wrong.

Regards,
Peter

To mess up the regulators he would have to have an access of -20v 100mA load for the 79L05 and +27v 100mA load for the 78L12 not likely with the two 9v batteries and if he had a short then the overload jumps in but you could still be right how ever there is no real reason for him to have a short as he was working on a wooden table top but now the thing that is bothering me is the fact that you are talking about a BF 245 and I don?t have one on my schematic. Ho by the way all help is welcomed and all comments except for negative ones.

Regards Xavier

Ok the batteries are wired   PCB to POSITIVE, NEGATIVE to POSITIVE, NEGATIVE to PCB.
That black wire you spoke of, is actually Blue, and it goes to R36.
Yes the volume control knob works
 Here's a pic

Ok but first that avatar of yours don?t look very friendly. Shocked or is that your mood swing Grin Now the control must be the one that goes to R15 if that is the case then you should have three wires from your pot centre wire to R15 out side wires to R17 and R16 if not then tell me where are they on the PCB also what is the voltage on the PCB at 0v and +12v I am not sure but I seem to see to many wires coming out of your plug or is that for the SW ?

 I'm a big Star Wars fan...lol Grin
When you say Pot, are you talking VR1 or VR2 ? Pot VR1's  front middle pin connects to R15, and the Two back pins connect to R16 and R17.

Ok now  did you turn that VR1? if you did then we have to reset it. VR2 is the control and the volume is added on is that right?
