i was wondering what would be the best PI detector for small objects in bad soil (highly mineralized soil) ? objects the size of buttons on up.should it have a big coil or a small coil?im new to all this but not new to metal detecting have been doing it now for about 4 years with VLF detectors and this past weekend i went to a payed hunt in Va. and a VLF is no good in that hot soil but the ones use WHITES TDI AND THE GARRETT INFINIUM were having a blast and finding all kind of stuff.so thats when i wanted to know all these questions.can a home built detector be just as good if not better than a mass produced one?

That's an easy question to answer. Any detector CAN be better than any other. The real answer is more to the point of how detectors are manufactured from designs. Each and every detector manufacturer has engineers who are probably no more skilled than some of the folks here on these forums who design detectors as a hobby. The folks here come from all walks of life and we do have a few here who are highly skilled in electronics and offer advice to others like yourself.

Then there's the issue of how do you mean better? For coin hunting, personal preferences play a huge part in selecting the ideal machine. I coin hunt in the all metal mode. Some coins fake out the best detectors and I don't want to miss them. They're often the best coins which indicate they are pull tabs. Thus, any PI detector is good for my use if I were only hunting coins. For gold and jewelry, I favor the all metal mode in a VLF/TR machine on land and a PI detector in water.

Home made or commercial? I have both. I like them equally but for different uses. Confused? Me too.

thanks for your thoughts i think..my problem is i hunt relic's and some of the places i go to are never the same and this past weekend proved that point i hunted with my vlf and only found a very few relics while others using other pi detectors racked up.and its because of the high mineralized soil.that is why my question was what would work better on smaller relics like buttons and civil war relicks here in the states.if there are anyone here with opinions that would be a big help to me thank you for your time

A PI is better in those conditions. Hands down.

Hi

Ive only ever used one PI detector, so i dont have any to compare it against but i have the DetectorPro Headhunter Pulse. I have to say i am over the moon with it, sterdy build, very good indications, awesome depth....you can not discriminate on it, but for me, i dig all signals its ideal so i dont miss anything Smiley
