Hi folks.
I've built a chance v 1.2.1 and currently am using the coil from my minipulse.
While it works quite well I'm not sure if I could get better depth/discrimination. Also it's heavy!
I made a basket coil as per the specs previously mentioned but comes up around 90uH? The only difference is that I used insulated wire but core is the same..  When connected it does work and detecting a gold ring about 15cm but the 9640s are buzzing like mad!
I'm a noob so please be gentle  if I'm missing something obvious!
I'm guessing I need more windings or thinner wire?  Any help gratefully received.

coil is not bad, but insulataion is too much so the distance between the wire cores is to Long and you get a low inductivity and low capacitance as result
so add more turn until you get around 300µH Great

or make a new one with magnet wire

Thanks Bernte_one.
I should have thought about it before I had wrapped it!
I guess I will unpick this one and make another with the same former. I made this just for testing but if all goes well I will make another finished housed one... I hope!

Hi guys,  I made another coil for testing with magnet wire this time but it still comes out almost the same as before.
Before I go any further,  is this a double sided coil? If so that's the problem!
Once again thank you for any help.

I think the way of winding the coil is wrong.
I think you are only winding half the coil.
How can I explain it?
Does your coil have the same number (amount) of wire on both sides?
Or the other side (bottom side) is just the plywood?
could you post a pic of both sides of the coil?
I build one few weeks back and i got the correct data.
I will try to post pics and info later on today.

Hi Nickel_n
Thank you, this has confirmed what I was thinking.
I'd only wound wire on to one face of the ply!
I better get some more wire eh  Wink
If you could share any info you have on your coil It would be much appreciated, its not been easy finding all the correct information.
Its been driving me mad today trying to understand what the problem was.
I know its a bit of an ask but could you explain a little how to start the coil please,
eg: do I wind one side and then flip it and do the same? <or> do I start at point A and move along X (I cant remember the number of divisions off the top of my head right now)
then cross over to the other side advance another X and then back over and so on?
Once again cheers for the help, its appreciated
Smiley

Sorry but i have been busy today and i had no time to get pictures of the coil
But i think from your pics on post 21 and 23 you have to many cuts on the plywood former. They should be 72 cuts all together
Look at post 20 the second picture.
Start: 1in -2out -3in -4out -5in -6out-1a-2a .....and so on.
My former is 8 inches diameter and i used magnet wire 0.54mm and one full circle plus one extra overlap over (1in to 2out )give me
~320uH and 1.8 ohm
I will post pics as soon as i can.
I am trying to build a minipulse plus revD. I got most of the parts. I am missing some and it takes for ever to get them from China.

Cheers Nickel_N, I need to make another former then.
The one I made before I'd made notches to pass the wire under and back up (like a peg) but look forward to seeing your information when you have the time.
With regards to the minipulse,  I've no idea what it is like for prospecting but can tell you that on the beach and heavy clay mud it's a great machine and found me an 1855 gold ring.  I think it's my favourite so far &  can work within 3 or 4 meters of my mate with a surf pi with almost no interference. I recommend you stick a volume control though as it's mega loud! Hope you get your parts soon.
