Most of the common op-amps will work some better than others so get the data sheet and do a comparison of the two.

Wil you should always try to stick to the original schematics but sometimes you have components that are hard to find because of there age or because they are not common making them more expensive and hard to get how ever most of the times you will be able to find a substitute for it.

D.K. , I have already called around and LM709 is also obsolete/ n/A , so it looks like I will have to settle for a round metal can UA709 for about $12.00 (U.S)

Wil .  $12.- for a UA709 is a rip off . This round metal UA 709 is normally harder to come by than the LM 709. I don't know how hard it is to order out of the Netherlands  but  we have all these components available . Cornelius

Thanks for the reply Cornelius, you do a lot to help out, and with very little available
information! Yes the $12 is a ripoff! but costs for shipping to the Netherlands would be more. I am now trying to figure out parts placement on the board, but I cant read the parts values on the drawing, so I am going step by step reading the schematic , and hope I dont screw up.

Cornelius please will you send him the component lay out. Wil just place a socket in the place of the 709 that way you can try out different types of op-amps one that you can try just for testing is the 741 it has a gain of 200mv apposed to 300mv with the 709.

Thanks Xavier, thats exactly what I am going to do, at least the 741 will tell me if it is working or not! I copied the parts placement diagram from the zipfile I downloaded from here and it is unreadable. The same goes for the piggyback board schematic... but then I appreciate any info  I can get.
