Hello Eugene and forum!!!
May I ask what is the best PI MD for gold nuggets and coins, is it the DP/sniffer 71, Hammerhead or the underwater PI? Thanks for your help and advice.

Hello . If you research all the PI Metal Detector projects posted over the last few years you will find out that the Goldscan IV is the most sensitive to small gold . Type Goldscan in the forum search on the top of the page and check July 20 2009 .

Hello Logen . I believe the goldscan PCB board posted earlier was [SMT] using surface mount components . Through hole is more popular with hobby builders but a through hole lay-out file for Goldscan IV was never released . It was done though and the boards are being sold in Europe . If you have the extra time to do this you will be the big Hero of the forum !!!
And speaking of what makes a PI Metal Detector more sensitive to gold , here is a excellent 2 page link about PI MDs and Gold:

Thanks a lot Eugene!
The Goldscan IV i downloaded is a through hole lay-out and not a surface mount, however, a surface mount lay-out is better but the only problem is the availability of the smd parts.

To forum:
In order to use your dp/xr71 project in excellent sensitivity, here is the steps in using it.
1. before using your pi md, be sure that the search coil connector is unplug and the md is away from any metal.
2. adjust all the controls to maximum
3. switch on the power. plug in the connector of the search coil. the meter will deflects at full scale. wait for about 10 to 20 seconds for the meter to go to zero.
4. when the meter is in zero reading, you can now try to search a metal.
note: never to reset your md because the sensitivity of the md will weaken. to reset it, follow step 1 to 4. when your md got close to any metal and reach full meter, the sensitivity will weaken. to reset it, let the search coil away from metal and will automatically retain its sensitivity.

my 8" search coil can detect at 1.4meters maximum. 18 1/2" search coil at 3meters maximum

Logenxxx,

Hi, if you want build a latest Goldscan IV with SMT component. all value of chip resistor, chip capacitor, chip coil, chip transistor and IC can convert as thru hole component most of the manufacturing of electronic parts have different packaging so the costumer can select what packaging want to use for assembly.
Example:
PHP66NQ03LT in SOT78 (TO-220AB) is for Thru Hole
PHB66NQ03LT in SOT404 (D2-PAK) is for SMT
PHD66NQ03LT in SOT428 (D-PAK). is also for SMT

note: you can see that the 3rd letter represent of packaging and that is my 18th years experience in Electronic Mfg. Company.

Hopefully can help you. It's your choice. Thanks.

Hi Raff! Have a good day!

I use a single sided pcb. Single or double sided pcb performance has no difference, you know. As Ram said, double sided pcb is much more advance, high tech and a little bit smaller in size than single sided pcb. However, I am no more interested to build a double sided bec. i am interested with Goldscan IV that can detect tiny nuggets.

I discovered that stages in using the DP MD by trial and error bec. before,I experienced poor detection and instability too. Thanks I succeded the trial and error process.
I also made a very small search coil, 1" and it can detect a 1/2 gram nugget but half inch away. hehehe!!! not so good isn't it.

To Vourvon:
Thanks for your advice but my problem is SMT are hard to get in electronics store.

Logenxxx,

No need to buy a SMT parts because all SMT parts have manufacture a thru hole parts by maker with same value or part code. If you get the IC number of SMT you can check the data sheet and the part number of thru hole is also indicated to the data sheet.

hello Logenxxx,
well i need your help please ,
i did't find lf357 and replace by TL071 ; R5 =1k100 1w ; R6 = 1k ; C30-C31 = 10,000uf 35v ; volume pot =100 Ω . my DP is unistable ......... Violent
have you doing a modification on this pcb ..............?
Regards.........raff

No problem with your component, TL071 will work instead of LF357. 100R volume is only for the sound level. it doesn't have any influence in circuit operation. 1K is OK for it. Capacitor is in parallel with input power. therefore its rule is only for noise reduction. consider the Coil. its resistance should not below 2.6Ohm or above 3.5Ohm. I think the 3Ohm coil should be best. check it.
