Does anyone make a complete PI kit for a do it yourselfer without an electronics background? I'm great at fabricating, but have little electronics knowledge. Like a kit that has everything soldered together so I can make a housing and install it, also an already made coil to match it. Or would one of you eletronics techs like to build yourself one and build me the same thing to buy from you?

Don't know of any kits that complete.

We do have a few members that offer kits.

All well documented and parts and board inclusive.

Silverdog offers a few kits the simplest being the Surf PI.

Coil is simple enough to build for that machine.

Take a look here:

Gary provides a more complicated PI kit but will make the coil minus the housing for you.

Maybe you could contact him and have him twist one up for the Surf!

I know of nothing that does not require some level of electronics knowledge.

There is one member here who used to design some of the best metal detectors on earth who is now fully retired and might be interested in building one for you. Richard Ray is his name and his user name. Search using his name and then PM him. He's a bit housebound right now and might appreciate your request.

You are very right in assuming that building a kit is not quite like building a model car or airplane. There are some things you need to do during the building process that might be difficult. Winding a coil seems daunting but there are adequate resources right here on that subject to walk you through it. The process is almost entirely mechanical.

You could also go the "starving student" route by visiting your local trade school or high school and offering a one time job to a student of electronics to build one for you. The local Ham Radio club will most certainly have a few folks who might take on a part time job like you want done. These are hard times and often a little job can help out in a big way.

Good luck, mate.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.
