There are a couple of members here from Perth. We sometimes get together for a hunt.

Hurry up and answer me so you can get one more post! LoL

A few more discussions and you'll have your 15.

Hello Everyone . There were a few mods. done on this machine in 2005 . And it really boosted the performance of the GS4 . It got the pulse delay down to 10 micro-seconds . Increased the depth a little , plus noise reduction . The exact details were never posted because someone was doing this for the "Money only" !!!! I think there were 5 things done I fugured out 3 , and am working on the other 2 . So I will post more later on . So if a few of you are planning to build this , Hold off for a while ........ These modification details could have been posted already , but its like the Taco Bell Commercial " Its all about the Roosevelts Baby" = [MONEY]

Eugene,

No problems about the delay in sorting this and 3 out of 5 in about a day is good going!  Though I was never good waiting for my toys at Christmas, this is a long term project for me and its better having an idea of any mods before building starts!

Grateful for your efforts  Smiley

Hello Chudster . If I remember correctly and my Alzheimer's is not bad today  Shocked , they replaced all Integrated circuits using better [lower noise] IC'S . Replaced all capacitors with better types . Installed Minelab Connector Plugs for the Search-coil . They moded the circuit board for a DD/mono search coil , and added a better potentiometer for the variable gain control . The unit now can be set to a 10 us delay . The information was posted without any diagrams or parts list , and was in 2005 on another forum . So we need to find out the specifics before we start building .

HH.................Eugene

Hello Everyone . If you noticed earlier I stated they designed a DD/mono coil in 2005 for the GS4 , which is really a mono coil wound as two D configurations in series or possibly another configuration might be two separate coils in series , one diameter is smaller than the other . Minelab or Whites might be using that design Today .
HH.......Regards..........Eugene

Hi all,

I am not doing this for money.  Its for fun!  No problem sharing thoughts and ideas as is the spirit here.

I am happy to bash my rusty designers head to see if we can improve.  Not keen to redesign the circuit board if it can be helped as it is not my forte' and the layout of this beast is probably quite critical (noise perspective).

Eating the elephant one bite at a time:

One simple suggestion is not to use traditional 555 timers.  555s are a wonderful versatile device but it was instant dismissal at one workplace if you suggested a circuit with them.  If I was redesigning and doing a circuit board change then there are more simple/ efficient integrated ways of generating a dual +/- 5 volt supply available now that would also lower noise.

Without a board redesign, there are lower power (and therefore probably noise) 555 pin for pin compatibles and this could be one of the simple improvements that was made.  There may be better op amps but the chosen ones are readily available.  I'll look into these aspects as a starter and try and make a call as to whether those changes are significant.

Cheers,

Chudster

chudster;

Don't despair!

If you want just 12v +/-, there are simple chips, out there, that do just that with NO inductances.... how about using an RS232 line driver to generate -12v?? It will not be high current, but....

If you need a stable RC oscillator, as a frequency source, an LM567 will produce both square and triangle waves. Just use a minimum 10 k load. An LM567 is more stable than an LM555.

I am also planing to build one of these.
And I've noted that R14 is missing from the pcb.
Was that an oversight, or was it deliberate?
